Ohio Surgeon Faces Prison Time for Forcing Abortion Pill on Girlfriend

An Ohio surgeon is looking at a potential five-year prison sentence in 2024 after he reportedly forced his girlfriend to take an abortion pill. The Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office shared the news on May 6 regarding Hassan James Abbas, a 32-year-old former resident surgeon from Toledo, who has entered a no-contest plea to several charges, notably for illegally distributing drugs that induce abortion.

As explained by the Ohio State Bar Association, a no-contest plea doesn’t mean he admits guilt but recognizes the core facts presented in the prosecutor’s case.

Abbas was indicted on December 4, 2025, facing a range of serious charges including kidnapping, tampering with evidence, and identity theft. Reports indicate that he started a relationship with a woman who was his patient shortly after separating from his wife in October 2024. Allegedly, when this woman informed him about her pregnancy on December 7, 2024, he offered her an abortion, which she refused.

Not long after, Abbas is said to have exploited his ex-wife’s information to order the abortion medication mifepristone and misoprostol online. There seems to be an unusual twist—he purportedly attempted to offer her hot drinks prior to the incident. On December 18, 2024, he allegedly crushed the pills and forced them into her mouth while she slept.

Luckily, she managed to escape and called 911, although he reportedly hung up the phone before help could arrive. She eventually ran away and sought medical assistance, but tragically, reports indicate that the baby did not survive.

In his plea, Abbas acknowledged four charges, with kidnapping and tampering with evidence set to be dropped during sentencing under a plea bargain. His upcoming sentence could result in as much as five years in prison, alongside a fine that could reach $15,000. The sentencing is scheduled for June.
