Significant Changes for the 76ers
Big shifts are happening within the Philadelphia 76ers organization.
President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey is no longer with the team, according to a report from ESPN’s Shams Charania on Tuesday night. Morey had discussions with owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer, and it was decided that the organization should move in a different direction.
Interestingly, Nick Nurse will continue as the team’s head coach despite this shake-up.
This change comes just two days after the 76ers’ tough playoff exit, where they lost all four games to the Knicks in the second round.
Notably, all but one of those losses were by double digits, with the team suffering a 30-point defeat in Game 4.
Morey had taken over as president in November 2020, after a long stint as the Rockets’ general manager for 13 years.
Now, the 76ers plan to be led by former Warriors executive Bob Myers, who is currently head of sports at Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment. He’ll be looking to fill roles that will guide the team through free agency and the upcoming NBA Draft.
During Morey’s six-season tenure, Philadelphia had a regular season record of 270-212, making the playoffs five times. However, they never advanced past the Eastern Conference semifinals, which, I suppose, raises a few eyebrows. Highlights included Joel Embiid winning the MVP award for the 2022-23 season, and VJ Edgecomb, the 2025 No. 3 overall draft pick, finishing third in the Rookie of the Year voting.
That said, this past season saw some challenges, with Embiid and Paul George playing in only 38 and 37 games respectively. In the end, the team settled for seventh in the East. They did manage to overcome a 3-1 deficit to beat the Celtics in the first round but looked significantly outmatched by the Knicks in the following series.
Morey’s time was not entirely free of drama. Tensions flared up last summer when then-star James Harden accused him of lying, demanding a trade from Philadelphia. His fervent comments included, “Daryl Morey is a liar,” which, well, was quite a bold statement.
Ultimately, Harden got his wish in November, joining the Clippers in a multi-team trade.
The new leadership will face tough calls ahead, like whether to keep veteran Kelly Oubre Jr. on the roster.
