Shohei Ohtani Breaks Home Run Drought with a Little Help from Ice Cube
So, did Shohei Ohtani really need something special to end his two-week home run slump? Perhaps a certain entertainer in the booth could work wonders.
On Tuesday night, the Dodgers hosted a stadium-wide giveaway of Ice Cube bobbleheads, featuring the iconic figure alongside the team’s World Series trophies, all decked out in Dodger blue.
To celebrate the occasion, Ice Cube threw the ceremonial first pitch, kicked off the game with the classic “It’s Dodger Baseball Time” announcement, and showed up on the team’s broadcast during the third inning.
It was during his guest appearance that Ohtani came up to bat and connected for a significant hit. This was a big moment, being his first home run since April 26, and just his second in 109 at-bats.
As Ohtani’s ball sailed into left-center field, Ice Cube was animatedly reacting via video call. “Yes! Then let’s go. Yeah, yeah!” he exclaimed, adding, “I couldn’t have written the script any better.”
Before Ohtani’s impactful hit, Ice Cube was chatting with Joe Davis and Orel Hershiser about his long-standing support for the Dodgers. He shared anecdotes from the team’s recent championship celebrations and his unofficial role as the team’s cheerleader.
Over the past couple of years, he’s experienced some unforgettable moments at Chavez Ravine—like performing at the 2024 World Series pregame celebrations and making a dramatic entrance to present the Commissioner’s Trophy, which inspired the bobblehead design.
“This is one of the craziest things that ever happened to me,” Ice Cube remarked. “I love the Dodgers. Being a fan is just amazing… being invited to join against the Yankees was something else entirely. I’ve been on cloud nine for two years straight.”
This euphoria continued as Ohtani’s performance allowed Davis and Hershiser to break down the highlights of his swings. “He hits this, goes to the yard, man,” Ice Cube commented about Ohtani. “How great is it to be a Dodgers fan right now and watch him play?”
