A.J. Ewing makes an impact in his first game as the Mets dominate the Tigers

AJ Ewing was recently elevated from Triple-A, bringing some much-needed energy to a struggling Mets team in Queens.

Judging by his debut, where the Mets triumphed 10-2 over the Tigers at Citi Field, this speedy outfielder might just be what they need.

The 21-year-old had a remarkable performance, reaching base four times, with three walks, scoring twice, hitting a triple—his very first hit—and even stealing a base. Quite the night!

He stood out in the game, bringing life to the crowd with a scorching 162 mph line drive.

“I think that’s my game. I’m patient, and I make the pitchers work for it,” Ewing noted, reflecting on his approach to hitting.

Manager Carlos Mendoza emphasized that Ewing will see plenty of playing time, referencing Ewing’s brief stint of only 12 games with Triple-A Syracuse before his promotion.

By night’s end, the remaining spectators were chanting Ewing’s name, a testament to his impactful debut.

Before the game, Ewing expressed, “I’m confident in my ability. I’ll stick to my game.” It certainly sounded like he meant it.

This addition was a crucial boost for the Mets, who were feeling the pressure to turn their season around.

As Mendoza pointed out, “We’re past the early part; we really have to step up now.”

After a disappointing road trip where they lost three of four games, the Mets managed to crank up their performance. Freddy Peralta continued his strong form for the fourth consecutive game, giving up just two runs over six innings against Detroit, a team that has struggled, losing six of their last seven.

It was only the second game in 12 that they scored five or more runs. Ewing’s contribution was pivotal, especially when he scored and celebrated joyfully with his teammates.

The game didn’t come without its challenges for the Mets, as Francisco Alvarez exited with a knee injury.

During the fourth inning, Alvarez started a rally with a double, followed by a hit that helped them take the lead.

The Mets initially fell behind, with the Tigers capitalizing on a shaky start from Peralta. However, they rallied effectively in the fourth, exploiting the Tigers’ errors for a 16-25 lead.

Despite the victory, concerns lingered, particularly with Alvarez leaving early.

After loading the bases in his first major league at-bat, Ewing enabled a scoring opportunity that shifted momentum.

While the Mets held onto the lead into the fifth inning, their performance revealed inconsistencies that need addressing.

As things progressed, the Mets needed some insurance runs, and with the Tigers faltering, they seized the moment.

The team had hoped to leave the rough first 40 games behind them, and perhaps Ewing’s debut signals a new beginning.

“He was nearly flawless at the plate,” Mendoza remarked, emphasizing the importance of Ewing to the team moving forward.

The manager wisely concluded, “We’ll need his contributions and everyone else’s as well.”
