Trump Critiques McConnell and Staff During Pentagon Budget Hearing

During a recent Senate hearing on the Pentagon’s budget for fiscal year 2027, former President Donald Trump took aim at Republican staff member Robert Karem, criticizing him for interrupting the proceedings awkwardly. Trump claimed Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell appeared “stupid and completely out of his mind” amid the confusion.

This incident unfolded as the Senate Armed Services Committee reviewed testimonies from Secretary of the Army Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Cain. As McConnell attempted to speak, Karem stepped in to address procedural matters, resulting in a disjointed conversation that Trump later used to illustrate a lack of direction among the senators.

McConnell stated, “The vote is over. The Secretary has to accompany the President on his trip to China. I’m going to ask Senator Murkowski for the last time. Thank you for being here.” With that, the session came to a close.

“I still have questions for Baldwin, Shaheen and Kennedy,” Karem intervened, urging the senators to “get this over with.”

McConnell appeared visibly perplexed, prompting Karem to lean in and whisper to him.

“Obviously, we don’t have that much time in the second round, so we’re going to get everyone through. Thank you, Sen. Murkowski, for taking over,” McConnell added as the meeting unfolded.

After the hearing, Trump, taking to social media, criticized Karem’s timing and intervention.

“The man who came up to Mitch McConnell today when McConnell thought the hearing was over… should be fired immediately!” Trump posted. He indicated that McConnell wasn’t confused but rather trying to manage the late proceedings while senators wanted to conclude. “His name is Robert Karem, he’s a Never Trumper,” Trump added, expressing discontent with Karem’s actions.

Karem had previously served as the U.S. assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs during Trump’s administration but resigned in 2018.

During the actual hearing, Hegseth and Cain were questioned regarding the proposed Pentagon budget, which totaled $1.5 trillion, with $350 billion expected to come through a settlement process. This funding strategy raised concerns for McConnell.

“Political realities don’t always allow for partisan budget coordination. You run great risks when your department’s top priorities aren’t included in your annual budget,” McConnell remarked.

While he supported certain elements of the budget, especially the missile defense project, he voiced skepticism about the funding mechanisms in place.

“These major initiatives will only work if we have a strong financial foundation,” he emphasized.

In his statements, General Cain highlighted the professionalism of the U.S. military, asserting that the proposed budget is vital to maintaining national security. He advocated for a dual approach focusing on both restoring operational readiness and investing in new technologies.

“Driving this pace of change requires timely, predictable capital and sustained investment,” Cain stated, underscoring the significance of the president’s budget in supporting these goals.
