Rick Jackson’s Gubernatorial Bid and DEI Struggles

Rick Jackson, a billionaire Republican and candidate for governor of Georgia, has made a bold promise to eliminate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives within state government and public education. Interestingly, back in 2021, he created a nonprofit, the 2021 Workplace Initiative, aimed at encouraging Georgia’s CEOs to invest in DEI, evaluate progress, analyze racial pay disparities, and adopt race-aware hiring practices. It’s a bit of a contradiction, right?

Jackson, who founded Jackson Healthcare—a network that includes various small businesses—has positioned himself as someone who resonates with former President Donald Trump. He suggests he would be Trump’s ideal governor, indicating admiration for Trump’s policies. As Trump has made it clear he wants to eliminate DEI practices in the U.S. and previously issued an executive order to this effect, Jackson’s alignment with him seems strategic.

Beyond his commercial enterprises, Jackson backs a nonprofit called goBeyondProfit, which aims to inspire business leaders in Georgia to incorporate corporate philanthropy into their strategies. The organization launched a DEI initiative that encourages a race-aware perspective in workplaces. This includes a video series aimed at helping CEOs navigate the dos and don’ts of DEI. Notably, one video recommends Ibram X. Kendi’s book, How to Be an Antiracist, which has drawn criticism for its perceived stance against colorblindness.

The content of the initiative highlights history’s impact on race in the workplace. It suggests failing to address DEI matters rightly merits shame. Experts involved in these discussions, including Matthew Harrison, a former executive at Jackson Healthcare, shared examples of how implementing DEI measures significantly increased diversity in hiring at Jackson’s companies.

Now, here’s where it gets tricky. Jackson is campaigning on the back of promises to effectively wipe out DEI, claiming to restore merit-based policies in Georgia. However, his company’s previous push for DEI initiatives could be a stumbling block for his campaign narrative. His platform advocates for a ban on state-sponsored DEI programs while also insisting he intends to “ban the madness of DEI” and criminalize reverse discrimination.

Fox News Digital reached out to Jackson’s campaign for insight into his awareness of past DEI efforts and how they correspond with his current stands. The campaign defended Jackson, claiming he would only seek out the best talent and ban reverse discrimination.

In 2021, as social justice movements gained momentum, Jackson’s nonprofit introduced a DEI initiative called Leading Thriving Workplaces with Race in Mind. This included a noteworthy video series promoting DEI considerations in the workplace. However, Jackson’s fight against DEI now appears quite at odds with those past commitments.

As the Republican primary in Georgia heats up, Jackson’s ability to align himself with Trump will likely be a focal point. Contesting his rivals, he claims to be a true Trump ally, even stating he agrees with every Trump policy he’s come across. His competitor, Lt. Gov. Bert Jones, has the official endorsement from Trump and has called Jackson a “definitely no Trumper.” Adding personal flair, Jackson has likened another opponent to the Biblical figure “Judas,” stirring the pot further.

With the primary election looming next Tuesday and a general election in November, Jackson has a tightrope to walk. The juxtaposition of his past DEI advocacy and current promises seemingly paints a complex picture of his campaign’s true colors.
