Homeland Security Secretary Critiques Governor Over ICE Operations

Homeland Security Secretary Mark Wayne Mullin recently expressed strong criticism of Democratic Governor Abigail Spanberger following an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation in Virginia. This particular operation resulted in the arrest of Marvin Len Morales, a three-time felon, who has previously been deported twice and has notable criminal charges including a felony drug offense.

Mullin shared his views during an early morning interview in Manassas, Virginia, asserting that the arrests illustrate a significant issue: the limited collaboration between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. He contends that the policies in place hinder ICE’s ability to remove habitual offenders from communities effectively.

“Unfortunately, there’s been no cooperation;” he stated. “She criminalized our position to some degree. She actively recommended local law enforcement not to engage with us,” Mullin said, referring to Spanberger while standing near detained individuals.

“This is the third time we’ve arrested this individual. He has sneaked back into the country despite his extensive criminal history. We shouldn’t have to deal with this kind of activity in our neighborhoods,” Mullin added, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

Mullin shared concerns about Virginia being recognized as a sanctuary state, suggesting that such policies contribute to rising criminal activity. “In places like Fairfax, almost half of the homicides involve individuals who shouldn’t even be in the country,” he noted, highlighting the broader ramifications for the state.

A spokesperson for Governor Spanberger responded to Mullin’s assertions, stating that the governor is committed to prosecuting violent offenders thoroughly and is open to cooperating with ICE. They emphasized ongoing support for interagency collaboration and noted that Virginia law enforcement continues to assist ICE in apprehending individuals as needed.

Moreover, Spanberger’s team pointed out that the Virginia Department of Corrections maintains its longstanding protocol of notifying ICE when non-citizens are in detention, underlining that the governor prioritizes community safety.

Mullin further articulated the importance of local partnerships, suggesting that ideally, local law enforcement should take the lead in detaining individuals like Morales, instead of ICE needing to conduct operations in neighborhoods.

He concluded by criticizing Democratic leaders who, in his view, place political ambitions over lawful cooperation, indicating a need for a united front to uphold the rule of law. Despite the challenges, he praised ICE’s ongoing efforts, stating they work diligently to keep communities safe.

“What you’re witnessing is ICE fulfilling its responsibilities,” Mullin said. “They are continually working to protect our streets, embodying the directives set by the administration.”
