Mets Player Injury Update
It seems like no player on the Mets is secure in their position right now.
Clay Holmes, a rare standout in this disappointing season for the Mets, will be out for an indefinite period due to a fractured right fibula. The injury occurred when he was hit by a pitch from Spencer Jones during the fourth inning on Friday.
Coach Carlos Mendoza mentioned that Holmes will be sidelined “for an extended period.” The incident took place as Jones led off in that inning.
Holmes managed to complete the inning and even recorded an out in the fifth before exiting in a 5-2 loss at Citi Field. “This is a big blow. He’s one of the most reliable players we have,” Mendoza commented, acknowledging the impact of this loss.
Interestingly, this was the first time this season Holmes gave up more than two runs in nine starts. The rotation has already been impacted by injuries to Kodai Chiga, who is dealing with lumbar spondylitis, as well as lefty David Peterson and Sean Manaea, both of whom have been out of action.
Jones expressed his surprise upon hearing about Holmes’ injury. “I didn’t know that,” he remarked, noting that they are friends and train together in Nashville during the offseason. “It’s tough to hear,” he added.
The Mets are now in need of another pitcher to fill the gap left by Holmes. Jonah Tong has struggled recently with a 5.68 ERA in nine starts at Triple-A Syracuse, notably allowing seven runs—six earned—in just one-third of an inning during his last outing.
In a more positive light, right-hander Jack Wenninger has excelled, starting seven games this season and holding a stellar 1.08 ERA, not allowing a single run in his last three starts. Yet, regardless of who they bring up, it’s unlikely they can replicate Holmes’ contributions.
This season has already seen Holmes in impressive form, boasting a 1.86 ERA in his first eight games and standing as a potential All-Star candidate. But everything changed with Jones’ return.
Juan Soto described Holmes’ injury as “really sad,” adding, “We’re going to support him. That’s just the worst… I’m going to miss Clay when he’s gone.” Currently, Soto is also sidelined with a calf strain, alongside Francisco Lindor, who’s facing a similar issue.
Key offseason signings like Luis Robert Jr. and Jorge Polanco haven’t started strong and are also on the injured list. While rookies Carson Benge and AJ Ewing have brought some spark to the batting lineup, the Mets, already facing challenges from injuries and below-average performances, will have to cope without their ace for the time being—adding to what has been a long, tough season at Citi Field.
