Nebraska Auditor: Reports of Fraud Are Coming in Rapidly

Nebraska’s Surge in Fraud Reports

Nebraska State Comptroller Mike Foley has reported an increase in fraud complaints as officials aim to safeguard taxpayer funds.

“The volume of calls, complaints, and emails coming into my office is unusual,” Foley stated in an interview. He noted that this trend is becoming more pronounced, as highlighted in a recent report.

Foley’s background reveals that, as a former public auditor in Nebraska, he identified millions lost to waste and fraud within government functions.

On a national level, the Trump administration has initiated a task force to tackle fraud, directed by Vice President J.D. Vance.

“As media attention on this issue grows, we anticipate an uptick in calls, and that’s fine,” Foley remarked. “We welcome those inquiries and aim to determine which are genuinely actionable.” He confirmed that calls have indeed risen.

A earlier this year, a group of conservative financial officials, claiming they have already recouped billions in taxpayer funds, committed to supporting Vance’s efforts.

Mr. Vance has also revealed recent fraudulent activity, including the misappropriation of $15 million in Medicaid funds by an immigrant in Maine.

“Fraud occurs when a government prioritizes criminals over law-abiding citizens, and this must end. Under the Trump administration, we are actively addressing this issue daily,” Vance asserted.

In the meantime, Foley mentioned that he is investigating potential misuse of taxpayer dollars by state employees who have been using state vehicles, tracked by GPS, for personal errands and trips to liquor stores.

“Unfortunately, Nebraska has high taxes, and people are aware of that. Many are frustrated that their money isn’t used effectively. They depend on my office to address these concerns, and we are committed to doing so,” he explained.
