Long Beach Pride Parade Thrives Despite Festival Cancellation
On Sunday, Long Beach’s Pride Parade turned out to be a remarkable event, even after the unexpected cancellation of the accompanying Pride Festival. The city’s annual festival had been set to start on Friday, but city officials called it off over issues with paperwork and testing.
The 43rd Annual Long Beach Pride Festival, originally scheduled to commence at 10 a.m., was themed “Fearless and Free,” promoting themes of resiliency, authenticity, and equality. It was unfortunate, really, that the festivities were halted last minute.
In response to the cancellation, city officials transformed Bixby Park into a lively venue. From noon until evening, attendees enjoyed live music and a free drag show, boosting the festive atmosphere of Pride.
Xavier Becerra, currently running for governor of California, joined the parade festivities. He expressed his commitment to protect LGBTQ+ rights on social media, noting his efforts against discrimination and his intention to support dignity and freedom for all.
City leaders announced plans to enhance transportation options between downtown Long Beach and Bixby Park, encouraging locals and visitors to frequent nearby businesses and eateries. Normally, the festival draws around 80,000 participants.
“We’re looking forward to the Long Beach Pride Parade,” city officials remarked, emphasizing the happiness it brings to the community.
Since 2024, the city has taken over the parade operations from the Long Beach Pride Group, which still supervises the festival but is now facing more scrutiny due to permitting issues. Officials reflected on the frantic efforts late Friday night to find a new venue after the permit had expired.
The city conveyed that while the deadline for the original festival permits had passed, they remain dedicated to assisting with meaningful community events. It seems the spirit of Pride is resilient, as evidenced by the lively parade that took place despite the festival’s sudden cancellation.
Organizers have already voiced plans to host a full festival next year, aiming to bring back the celebratory atmosphere in its entirety.
