Pope Leo’s Controversial Diplomatic Move Sparks Outrage
On May 12, Pope Leo sparked significant backlash with a diplomatic gesture towards Iran, which many perceived as an endorsement of a repressive regime. This was especially vocal on social media, where critics—including Iranian exiles and conservatives—expressed their anger, arguing that the Vatican was legitimizing a government known for its harsh actions.
Liz Wheeler, a Blaze TV host and self-identified devout Catholic, shared her concerns. She questioned, “This is the Iranian regime. It’s a fanatical, Islamist, theocratic regime. Why on earth would the Universal Church of Christ honor these murderers?”
Yet, some research into the situation has brought different insights, with Liz asserting that Pope Leo isn’t being unfairly targeted. She explained that this award is routine for ambassadors serving over two years at the Vatican, implying that it wasn’t solely about individual merit. Other recipients were recognized at the same time as Mokhtari, the Iranian ambassador.
Wheeler likened the Grand Cross of the Knights of Pius IX to a “participation trophy,” suggesting, “The only qualification is being present as a Vatican envoy for two years. So, you earn this trophy,” ultimately concluding that the incident isn’t as alarming as initially perceived.
However, she acknowledged that “external perception is key.” In her view, the optics of this situation are problematic, emphasizing the sentiment among many that Pope Leo seems to be giving a nod to a regime notorious for its brutal treatment of dissenters and Christians, which raises ethical concerns.
