NBA Playoff Recap: Four Teams Stand Tall
The NBA playoffs have arrived at a thrilling stage. With just four teams left vying for the 2026 championship, the intensity of the games is at an all-time high.
In the Eastern Conference, the New York Knicks are basking in their greatest success since their last championship in 1973. However, their path isn’t straightforward; the Cleveland Cavaliers pose a significant challenge after having a winning streak of seven games against the Pistons.
Let’s take a look at how these teams rank in terms of their chances of emerging victorious.
Before the season kicked off, it was anticipated that the Cavs and Knicks would be the last contenders in the East, and that’s panned out, though there have been unexpected developments in Cleveland. Heading into Game 7 against the Pistons, the Cavs felt confident, despite trade acquisition James Harden underperforming once again in a crucial match. It’s pretty impressive that Cleveland found a way to win without him, showing the depth of talent on their roster. Harden will need to step it up against the Knicks, though. After their initial loss to Detroit, Cleveland focused on getting Evan Mobley more involved, which is vital for their chances in the finals. His growth is essential, especially against stars like Jalen Brunson. For Cleveland to make it to the finals, Donovan Mitchell will need to shine as the series’ standout player, which he is more than capable of. The spotlight will also be on Sam Merrill and Max Strus, whose shooting can greatly affect the outcome. Even though New York has performed better so far, Cleveland is still evolving and may just surprise everyone in the conference finals.
Remember when the Knicks were trailing 2-1 to the Atlanta Hawks, and it seemed like coach Mike Brown might be on the chopping block? Fast-forward, and they’ve turned it around, winning seven consecutive games, becoming a strong East contender. Sure, they were favorites from the start, but now they seem to be hitting their peak right when it matters most. OG Anunoby’s hamstring injury could have derailed their momentum, but reports suggest he may be set to play in Game 1. His return could be crucial for New York, offering spacing and sharpshooting alongside Jalen Brunson’s offensive prowess and supporting a star-studded lineup. Brunson has consistently proven his ability to exploit mismatches and is always on the hunt for scoring opportunities. This series—and the next—will be crucial for bench players like Miles McBride and Mitchell Robinson, who contribute unique strengths. If Anunoby regains form, the Knicks could become the East favorites and set themselves up for a showdown with either the Spurs or Thunder.
It’s quite striking that Victor Wembanyama, entering his third year, hasn’t had a taste of playoff action yet. The Spurs garnished an impressive 62 wins this season, placing Wemby among the elite players globally. Standing at 7’5″ with an 8-foot wingspan, and showcasing incredible skills and agility, he’s made the Spurs a formidable contender. Pairing him with talents like Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, the Spurs have found incredible synergy, showcasing an impressive points differential throughout the season. Even with adjustments, they’ve maintained high scoring efficiency. Luke Cornet adds strong defensive support as Wembanyama’s backup, and Julien Champagnie has evolved into a reliable shooter. Not to forget De’Aaron Fox, who, while sometimes a source of frustration, excels in critical moments. The Spurs have had their missteps, notably in the playoffs when Wemby was sidelined. However, they’ve proven they can compete, having triumphed over the Thunder during the regular season. It wouldn’t be shocking at all if they clinched the championship now and in future years.
The Thunder, on the other hand, are undefeated at 8-0 in the playoffs, with six victories coming by substantial margins. While the Spurs will present a new level of competition compared to the Suns and Lakers, this matchup could be the beginning of an intense rivalry. The Spurs won four out of five matches during the regular season, but the Thunder seem ready for the challenge. Their defense is historic, and players like Fox and Castle complicate scoring opportunities for opponents. Despite some defensive strengths from the Spurs, slowing down Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is another task entirely. SGA has eclipsed 20 points in every game this season and has earned consecutive MVP honors. Chet Holmgren, while not as dominant as Wemby, still ranks among the top players in the league. However, one question remains: how effective will Jaylen Williams be? After missing much of the season with an injury, his potential impact is uncertain. Thankfully, Ajay Mitchell seems to cover the offensive needs seamlessly. At the moment, Gilgeous-Alexander is arguably the league’s top player, but with Wembanyama on the rise, that title might be shifting soon. Regardless, the Thunder appears poised to take on this challenge and break new ground in the postseason.
