Nathan Leamer from Build American AI: 'We Need American Leadership in AI or China Will Take Charge'

U.S. Leadership in AI is Crucial, According to Build American AI Director

Nathan Riemer, who heads Build American AI, emphasized the necessity of U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence (AI) to prevent falling behind China. He warned that if the U.S. cedes its position in AI innovation, many advantages for American workers could be lost.

“We need American leadership. Otherwise, we’ll be at a disadvantage,” Riemer stated during an “Energy Dominance and AI” policy event in Washington, D.C. Attendees included Doug Burgum, Secretary of the Interior, and Senator Dave McCormick from Pennsylvania.

The organization, Build American AI, aims to dispel myths about AI while supporting U.S. leadership. Their efforts involve collaboration with federal agencies and encouraging lawmakers to recognize and communicate the positive aspects of AI technology.

Riemer outlined his perspective on the current competition for AI leadership. He suggested it’s a “two-front war.” One front involves educating the public about the job opportunities and economic benefits AI presents in the U.S. The second front focuses on modernizing infrastructure, from data centers to energy grids, and establishing the guiding rules for the industry.

Senator McCormick echoed the urgency of addressing the AI revolution in America, labeling it “the most critical moment of our lifetime.” He highlighted the rapid pace of change driven by AI and its significant impact across various sectors. He proposed that Pennsylvania should take the lead in AI initiatives, steering the competition towards U.S. interests rather than those of the Chinese Communist Party.

McCormick pointed out that the U.S. is competing not just with China, but also with other states for energy supply capacity. He mentioned ongoing competition among states like Tennessee and Florida to support energy infrastructure.

These discussions align with the objectives of Build American AI, which promotes policies that foster trust in technology and enhance American competitiveness in emerging fields.

Riemer also stressed the importance of lawmakers recognizing the vast opportunities AI offers voters. He described it as a potential catalyst for unprecedented economic growth, urging the dismantling of false narratives surrounding the technology.

He argued for a national framework that supports innovation, allowing entrepreneurs across the country to harness AI for new ventures.

Following an executive order by President Trump in December focusing on national AI regulation, Riemer remarked that it underscores the urgency of developing a coherent national framework for AI. He mentioned that a unified rulebook is essential to avoid an inconsistent regulatory environment across states, which could hinder progress.
