Pro-Israel Groups Target Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massey
Pro-Israel lobbyists and various activists are investing substantial resources—more than $9 million—to unseat Republican Representative Thomas Massey in an intense primary challenge from an opponent endorsed by former President Donald Trump.
The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and other pro-Israel organizations have heavily financed efforts against Massey, while pro-Israel Republican donors have directed nearly $7 million toward Trump’s campaign via associated super PACs, according to various reports.
Massey has consistently opposed foreign aid for Israel, voting against it multiple times. In May, he advocated for putting a stop to all military assistance to Israel, referencing civilian casualties in Gaza and suggesting that Israel needs to finance its own defense.
His opponent, Ed Gullane, a Navy SEAL, has raised about $3.16 million to contest Massey. FEC records show Gullane received significant contributions from organizations like the Republican Jewish Coalition and AIPAC’s super PAC, the United Democracy Project, along with over $11.8 million in independent funding.
Meanwhile, Massey’s campaign has gathered more than $5.5 million, benefiting from contributions from pro-life PACs and funds from various Republican candidates, including well-known figures like Ohio’s Jim Jordan and Senator Rand Paul. It’s worth noting that the pro-Massey contributions are still not keeping pace with the anti-Massey spending.
Anti-Massey groups are outspending those supporting him, with the former investing over $15 million in independent expenditures. Organizations like Kentucky 4th PAC and Win Freedom have contributed significantly to this total, surpassing $10 million in independent spending.
A pro-Trump super PAC, MAGA Kentucky, has also poured more than $7 million into efforts to defeat Massey, with significant backing coming from billionaires like Miriam Adelson and Paul Singer, who have contributed millions to both the MAGA Kentucky PAC and AIPAC-linked super PACs.
In light of these expenditures, a key race is unfolding in Kentucky’s 4th District, with Massey potentially facing a difficult defeat against Gullane. Current data indicates that anti-Massey efforts are leading pro-Massey initiatives by a significant margin.
The UDP and the Republican Jewish Coalition’s Victory Fund have notably allocated millions to undermine Massey, while he stands firm not only against aid to Israel but has also criticized Trump’s stance on foreign conflicts involving Iran. At a recent rally, Trump labeled Massey a “complete and utter disaster,” underscoring the challenges the incumbent faces in this contentious political climate.
