Sen. Bill Cassidy Reflects on Impeachment Vote After Primary Loss

Senator Bill Cassidy from Louisiana stood by his choice to convict former President Donald Trump during the latter’s second impeachment trial five years ago, despite his recent Senate primary defeat to a pro-Trump candidate.

In his statement, Cassidy expressed that voting to uphold the Constitution was a “privilege.” Even though he lost to Rep. Julia Letlow in the Republican primary, it’s notable that Trump endorsed Cassidy in January, suggesting he run against Letlow.

“I voted to uphold the Constitution. I might have lost my seat because of it, but frankly, who cares?” Cassidy remarked to reporters at the Capitol on Monday. “I got to vote to uphold the Constitution— is that not great?”

He further emphasized his commitment: “What you see here is a man who loves his country, who feels genuinely good about serving his fellow Americans.” There’s something about being able to say you voted for something important, you know? For me, that feels pretty good.”

Cassidy’s Political Future and Trump’s Response

In the primary results, Letlow secured 45% of the vote, followed by John Fleming with 28%. Cassidy placed third, receiving slightly more than 24%. This sets the stage for a runoff between Letlow and Fleming next month.

Trump took to social media after Cassidy’s loss to celebrate, stating, “I’m glad to know his political career is over!”

In a concession speech, Cassidy acknowledged the unpredictable nature of democracy, noting, “Sometimes things don’t go your way.”

He added, “But when you participate in a democracy, sometimes this happens.” His comments included a veiled critique of Trump, as he stated, “You don’t pout, you don’t whine… you don’t make up some excuse.” Cassidy appeared grateful for the opportunity to serve his constituents, reflecting on his time in office as a privilege.
