Tragic Shooting in San Diego Islamic Center
In a devastating incident at a San Diego Islamic center, two more members of the local Muslim community have been confirmed among the victims. Nader Awad and Mansour Kaziha were identified by the San Diego Council on American-Islamic Relations and the Islamic Center of San Diego.
Amin Abdullah, a security guard, has been regarded as a hero for his efforts to avert more deaths during the attack.
Authorities have named 17-year-old Kane Clark and 18-year-old Caleb Vasquez as suspects. Reports indicate that at least one suspect retrieved a firearm from a family home and left behind a suicide note expressing themes of racial pride, according to law enforcement sources.
Social media posts honoring Kaziha, affectionately known as “Uncle Mansoor,” circulated the day after the shooting. Community members remembered him as a “masjid neighbor” and a dedicated protector who committed his life to service.
Many shared anecdotes about how he left his secure home to confront the shooter and protect children present at the mosque.
Kaziha, referred to as “Abul Ezz” in the community, was actively involved with the mosque and managed its store for nearly four decades.
Awad’s daughter confirmed his passing in an Instagram post, stating that he died while trying to save his wife, a teacher at an Islamic school. She expressed immense pride in him, saying, “When he heard the gunshots, he ran to her aid without hesitation.” Awad risked his life not just for his wife, but for the students and others in the mosque.
Memorial services and vigils have taken place across San Diego, some arranged by the Islamic Center, while others involved interfaith gatherings. Imam Taha Hasan highlighted the grief in the community and noted continued prayers for the three heroes.
Two different fundraising efforts have successfully amassed millions to support the victims’ families. The campaign for Abdullah has surpassed $2 million to help with funeral and household expenses.
A second initiative, the Official ICSD Victim and Family Support Fund, directed to assist those impacted by the shooting, has also raised close to $1 million.
In light of the tragedy, the community center will remain closed for a second day following the attack. Hasan recounted the events during a news conference, expressing that Kaziha called 911 and prioritized the safety of others, ultimately sacrificing his life in the process.
