Controversial Calls and Challenges in Royals’ Loss

The ongoing situation surrounding umpire Laz Diaz has drawn attention, particularly following recent games.

During a game against the Red Sox on Monday night, Royals catcher Salvador Perez took a bold stance by challenging two pitches in succession. This prompted an interesting interaction with the umpires, which left some wondering if Diaz was having a bit of fun or sending a subtle message after a previously unchallenged call ended a streak.

In a scoreless fifth inning, Perez challenged a first pitch to Connor Wong. This set off a sequence where the automatic ball-and-strike system (ABS) later deemed the last pitch a ball, despite Diaz’s initial call. It turned out the bottom of the ball clipped the strike zone, which complicated matters further.

Lugo, the pitcher, then threw an 0-1 curveball, which Diaz called a ball, prompting Perez to again challenge. As Diaz acknowledged during his announcement, this was a significant moment, and the Royals’ announcer pointed out the emphasis he placed on Perez’s persistence.

The crowd erupted when Perez won the challenge, seemingly enjoying his efforts and making it 2-for-2 on challenges. One of the announcers jokingly speculated whether Perez enjoyed the process itself.

Notably, the next pitch, a fastball that crossed the zone, was one Perez had no hesitation about, indicating Diaz realized the error as well.

Eventually, Lugo managed to retire Wong, but the Red Sox capitalized, scoring two runs in the sixth inning, which proved pivotal in their 3-1 victory over the Royals.

Lugo reflected on the situation, saying it boosted his confidence significantly, and he appreciated having Perez behind the plate. “It changed my whole at-bat,” he noted, emphasizing how much the challenge mattered to him.

While ABS systems have their supporters, they also lead to some awkward moments where multiple calls are questioned rapidly. It can leave spectators scratching their heads, pondering why certain pitches that seem good don’t get the calls they expect.

Diaz’s track record hasn’t always been the best in fans’ eyes, and he often finds himself in the bottom half of umpire ratings, despite his many years of experience.
