Trump Showcases White House Ballroom Construction
During an unexpected media event on Tuesday, President Donald Trump gave reporters a glimpse of the construction work on the new White House Ballroom. The building, designed with notable security features and inspired by Roman and Greek architecture, is intended to enhance the presidential estate.
This morning, construction was in full swing, with workers actively finalizing details, as Trump projected a completion timeline of “six or seven months.” Initially budgeted at $200 million, costs have escalated to around $400 million. Trump mentioned that a $1 billion security package is now needed, at the military’s request, to bolster safety measures for the ballroom.
Earlier in the month, Trump placed blame on “fake news” for the rising expenses, arguing that certain studies indicated the structure needed to be significantly larger and more robust for future high-profile events and inaugurations.
He clarified that funding for the ballroom itself is sourced from his personal finances and private donors. Describing the space as a luxury “hut” situated on top of a substantial underground military facility, he emphasized that the public funds should go towards reinforcing the structure below.
Trump stated, “This is all my money and my donors’ money. This is all tax-free,” and added that the only change to the budget would involve expanding the size as requested by military officials.
Sen. Elizabeth McDonough noted that the proposed $1 billion allocation for security could not proceed under expedited budget reconciliation rules, prompting Republicans to consider alternative funding options.
Trump mentioned that additional fortifications were necessary, saying, “We have budgets for the secret services and the military to do some of the work here.” He also indicated the building’s height would offer expansive views of Washington.
“This is a gift to the United States of America. It will be one of the most beautiful buildings ever erected in this country… This is really for other presidents, not for me,” Trump said, stressing that it would serve future leaders.
He further mentioned that the new ballroom would include “4 inches of glass,” designed to be nearly invisible while providing extensive protection, as well as a roof capable of withstanding drone impacts.
“If a drone collides, it will bounce back,” he insisted.
The project aims to create a facility that is six stories deep, complete with a state-of-the-art military hospital and defense research center, all shielded by the ballroom above.
“This is a very complex building… Everything is connected and intertwined… in terms of beauty, the closest thing to this is probably the United States Supreme Court,” Trump expressed, looking ahead to the anticipated initial event featuring global leaders.
