U.S. Army Releases Declassified UAP/UFO Files, Sparking Cautious Christian Reactions
On May 8, the U.S. Army released over 160 previously classified files related to Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) and unidentified flying objects (UFOs). This release includes various photos, videos, and reports collected over decades. Additional documents are expected to be shared gradually as they continue to be reviewed.
Reactions within the Christian community, however, have been largely skeptical. Influential evangelical leaders and public figures are interpreting these files as potentially demonic rather than evidence of extraterrestrial life. There are concerns that these findings could disrupt core beliefs in creation, leading to spiritual uncertainty.
Rick Burgess, the host of the podcast “Strange Encounters,” is one such individual expressing worry that the excitement around these “alien” files could mislead believers.
Among the Christian responses to the UFO disclosures, Burgess highlights a particularly noteworthy one from Josh Howerton, the senior pastor of Lake Point Church in Dallas, Texas. Howerton’s take on the situation notably resonated with Burgess.
In a viral clip, Howerton articulates that discovering extraterrestrial life wouldn’t undermine faith. He points out that the Bible refers to God in the plural (as in “the heavens”), indicating a broader understanding of creation. He elaborates that biblical writers recognized three distinct “heavens”: the sky, outer space, and the actual heaven, where God resides.
Howerton continues by referencing Colossians 1, which notes that “God created all things in the heavens.” He mentions that if there are indeed entities in outer space, the Bible could classify them as angels or demons. He suggests that what many call aliens might actually be what the Bible names cherubim, seraphim, and various other celestial beings.
He acknowledges that in Ephesians 2, Satan is described as “the prince of the powers of the air,” which adds another layer to the discussion.
Howerton warns believers not to become engrossed in conversations about UFOs and aliens, emphasizing that it’s vital to remain focused on knowing Christ and living out one’s faith. “Don’t give level 8 attention to something of level 0.002 importance,” he quips.
Burgess calls Howerton’s perspective “amazing,” reminding listeners that supernatural entities, such as Lucifer and the demons that aligned with him, don’t operate like humans. He reflects that these beings can present themselves in various forms, further confusing matters.
Burgess expresses his belief that Satan might exploit these UFO and alien discussions to instill doubt within the church regarding God’s existence. “A significant deception is on the horizon,” he warns.
