Thomas Massie Concedes in Republican Primary, Critiques Trump Administration

Former U.S. Representative Thomas Massie voiced his criticism of the Trump administration during his concession speech after losing the Republican primary for Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District. His opponent, Ed Gullane, a Navy SEAL veteran backed by Trump, won the race.

Massie began his address by targeting Gullane, who has ties to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which advocates for U.S. support for Israel.

“I would have liked to have played earlier, but I had to call and concede to my opponent. Also, it took me a while to find Ed Gullane in Tel Aviv,” Massie remarked, adding a touch of humor.

This comment prompted a response from Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who expressed regret over Massie’s remarks.

Despite the light-hearted tone, Massie maintained that he and his team held strong moral principles throughout the campaign.

“We have always been honorable,” he noted, confirming his concession. “Contrary to all the criticism you have heard, we have not had a single ethics complaint filed against me or my staff in 14 years,” he emphasized.

He stressed the importance of voting based on principles rather than party affiliations, saying, “We desperately need people in this country to vote for principles over political parties.”

“For 14 years, the SOBs in Washington have been trying to buy my vote. They couldn’t buy it,” he added. “Why did the race get so expensive? Because they decided to buy seats. We ran a clean race,” he asserted.

During his speech, Massie was not targeted by Trump or the White House.

He also mentioned how he was observing news about one of Trump’s projects – transforming the White House ballroom for significant events, while critiquing the ongoing issues between the U.S. and Iran that have driven up oil prices.

“Gasoline is almost $5, diesel is almost $6, but they’re talking about this big ballroom that they’re going to build,” he pointed out, drawing a parallel to ancient Rome. “And people are just trying to make ends meet.”

Massie joined the crowd in chanting, “No more war!” This sentiment resonated in light of the Trump administration’s actions in conflicts like Operation Epic Fury, as well as concerns regarding renewed military actions against Iran.

Before the election, Trump took to social media, urging Republicans to vote against Massie, labeling him as detrimental to the party.

“Unscrupulous Congressman Tom Massie voted against tax cuts, the border wall, the military, and law enforcement,” Trump wrote. “This is the worst Republican in history. Kentuckians, vote for this bastard on Tuesday.”
