Trump claims Texas Democrat won't win as a vegan in Senate election

Trump Critiques Talarico in Texas Senate Race

President Donald Trump expressed strong confidence in his belief that Democrat James Talarico is unlikely to win the U.S. Senate race in Texas, suggesting that his vegan lifestyle makes him “unelectable” in the state.

Talarico, a notable state lawmaker, recently gained attention after securing the Democratic Senate nomination in Texas. However, he has faced backlash from conservatives for some of his controversial comments, which include assertions like “God is non-binary” and that “sex is a spectrum.”

Before boarding Air Force One on Wednesday morning, Trump predicted that Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, whom he endorsed, would achieve a “wide margin” victory in the upcoming primary runoff against incumbent Senator John Cornyn.

In his remarks, Trump also pointed out that Paxton would “continue to overcome a very flawed candidate who believes there are six genders.” He highlighted the absurdity of Talarico’s past statements about masks—suggesting, oddly, that they were incomprehensible for those who had worn them recently.

Trump then emphasized, “And he’s a vegan, he’s a Texas vegan,” reinforcing his view that a vegan cannot succeed in Texas politics.

These comments were partly in response to a video from 2022 where Talarico urged a reduction in meat consumption, framing it as an ethical and necessary measure to combat climate change. He declared his campaign a “no-meat campaign,” pledging to source vegan products from local businesses.

Amid the stir caused by Talarico’s past remarks, which conflict with Texas’s substantial beef industry, the National Republican Senatorial Committee mocked him, noting the state’s strong ties to cattle production. Comments from Senator Ted Cruz labeled Talarico as a “freak” for suggesting a barbecue ban, while John Cornyn mockingly promoted Republican values with a nod to steak.

In counter to the backlash, Talarico’s campaign showcased a photo of him donning a Texas flag shirt while enjoying a turkey leg, attempting to distance himself from the vegan label.

In light of Trump’s criticisms, Talarico’s spokesperson, JT Ennis, conveyed to Fox News Digital that the candidate is focused on addressing rising costs and corruption, emphasizing a movement aimed at empowering workers rather than aligning with political elites.
