Graphic Reddit posts by Democrat Graham Platner emerge in Maine Senate race

Maine Democrat claims that 'dismantling ICE' is a 'moderate' stance following deadly shooting in Minneapolis

Controversy Surrounds Maine Senate Candidate Graham Platner

Graham Platner, a Democratic candidate for the Senate from Maine, is facing significant backlash due to past inappropriate comments on Reddit that have resurfaced. His now-deleted account had graphic remarks about sexual acts in portable toilets and explicit graffiti in military restrooms.

Originally, in a March 2017 post in the r/Military subreddit, Platner shared thoughts on military scents and nostalgia. The comments were made under the handle “P-Hustle,” which he has confirmed belonged to him.

In another post from March 2021 on r/USMC, he discussed crude depictions found inside portable toilets during deployments.

Platner’s praise for explicit graffiti, which he referred to as “GWOT dick art,” was vividly articulated. He described it as “beautiful” and “bloody,” going into elaborate detail about his admiration for such imagery.

His military background includes joining the Marine Corps in 2003, serving three combat tours in Iraq, and later joining the Maryland Army National Guard. He returned to Afghanistan in 2018 as a security contractor.

In earlier comments, Platner dismissed concerns about PTSD, labeling them as “bull—-,” but now points to his own struggles to explain the issues surrounding his past online activity.

After requests for comments, Platner claimed his statements were merely jokes made in a context meant to be humorous. “It’s clear that I’m joking,” he stated, calling the behavior “s*posting” and arguing it was part of engaging with others online.

As the campaign heats up, critics have highlighted these vulgar comments, questioning Platner’s judgment as he aims for a Senate seat. Republican strategists are likely to utilize this controversy to paint him as too radical for mainstream support.

Mehek Cook, a political analyst, suggests that voters will scrutinize Platner’s past as indicative of his character and suitability for representing Maine. The tone of his campaign is based on authenticity, but these revelations may undermine that narrative.

Supporters like Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren have rallied behind Platner, and he became the presumptive nominee after his competitor, Governor Janet Mills, fell behind in polls and fundraising.

Concerns about Platner are not limited to past Reddit posts. He has been criticized for homophobic comments and other inflammatory remarks, which may remove him from favor in the broader electorate, especially when facing a seasoned candidate like Susan Collins.

Overall, the mounting evidence of Platner’s controversial past presents a challenge for his campaign, raising questions about his character that could resonate with voters in Maine.
