A.J. Brown trade speculation increases as worries about Puka Nacua rise

The Los Angeles Rams are in the midst of discussions about wide receivers this offseason, with trade rumors, internal doubts, and free agency talk all swirling around Sean McVay’s dynamic offense.

The most notable topic involves AJ Brown of the Philadelphia Eagles. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo mentioned that the Rams were surprisingly close to acquiring the All-Pro receiver earlier in the offseason.

“It was really close,” Garafolo shared on “The Rich Eisen Show.”

He specified that the situation was more advanced than their negotiations with the Patriots.

Garafolo indicated that while a deal seemed almost final, it eventually fell through due to “too many moving parts.” However, he suggested it wouldn’t be shocking if Los Angeles decided to revisit negotiations.

Part of his reasoning connects to the ambiguous status of one of the Rams’ key players.

“We don’t really know what’s happening with Puka Nacua this offseason. We hope everything turns out well for him,” Garafolo noted. “But that certainly adds to the complexities here, which is tough since there’s not much information about him off the field.”

Nacua’s offseason has raised eyebrows, primarily due to a troubling incident where he reportedly bit a woman while intoxicated on New Year’s Eve. This followed a peculiar sequence of behavior, including a livestream appearance with controversial figure Adin Roth, during which he made offensive gestures and questioned the NFL’s handling of various issues.

To complicate matters, Nacua is heading into the final year of his rookie contract. There’s a potential for a lucrative extension, but the lack of progress in negotiations has led to questions about his role with the team.

This context is crucial for McVay’s team, which values both talent and alignment with their culture. McVay recently emphasized the importance of fit during a podcast interview, discussing how sometimes it’s better for team dynamics to allow other players to shine instead of forcing in new talents.

This philosophy impacts how the Rams approach high-profile acquisitions, especially with veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford, who is seeking continued success at 38. The big question remains: Has Nacua’s inconsistency affected how much leeway he has with the team?

Brown isn’t the only prominent receiver being discussed in relation to the Rams. There has also been chatter linking the Rams to Stefon Diggs, a well-known free agent. Tom Pelissero from NFL Network mentioned this possibility on “The Rich Eisen Show,” albeit without any solid evidence.

“They told Davante Adams about a potential trade,” Pelissero noted. “Considering how close they were with AJ Brown, and with everything Nacua has going on, does adding Diggs make sense?”

In the meantime, the Rams’ receiving lineup, while still productive, lacks a solid third option, especially with Adams in his 13th season. Although the team seems confident in their current group, the combination of rumors about Brown, speculation regarding Diggs, and the uncertainty surrounding Nacua’s future keeps the position complicated.

If history tells us anything about this franchise, which isn’t shy about making aggressive moves, the upcoming months might decide whether Los Angeles will stay the course or opt for another major acquisition.
