Anthony Richardson’s Uncertain NFL Future

Anthony Richardson seems to be navigating a tricky situation. After asking for a trade from the Colts earlier this offseason, he’s still showing up for voluntary OTAs, presumably while he waits for clarity on his future in the NFL.

It appears, however, that there isn’t much of a trade interest in Richardson at the moment. Since being drafted No. 4 in 2023, he’s only started 15 games, which doesn’t exactly give teams a lot to work with.

At a recent jersey retirement ceremony in Gainesville, Florida, Richardson expressed gratitude for the Colts allowing him to continue working. “The Colts still give me a chance to go out there and work hard and potentially get on the field,” he said, adding, “I’m happy to stay in the NFL and work. Just being in OTAs was a blessing in disguise for me.”

Richardson had a brief stint as a starting pitcher at the University of Florida before joining the NFL, but he was considered more of a developmental project at that time.

Unfortunately, his rookie season didn’t play out as expected. He only started four games and then suffered a season-ending injury. Things got even more challenging for him in 2024, when he was benched and lost his starting spot to Daniel Jones, who was signed in 2025.

The situation turned even more unfortunate when Richardson fractured his orbital bone before a game last season. With Jones sidelined due to a torn Achilles tendon, Richardson was limited to just two pass attempts, which forced the Colts to bring in Philip Rivers, a former player who had been retired for four years.

Reflecting on his career, Richardson emphasized the importance of hard work. “If you don’t work to become a better player, you’re not going to be in the NFL,” he mentioned. He wants to take every opportunity that comes his way and make the most out of them.

As for the current team dynamics, Jones is now cleared for 7-on-7 drills, but it remains to be seen if Richardson or Riley Leonard will get the first-team 11-on-11 snaps during OTAs.
