A fierce sand fire swept through a neighborhood in Simi Valley, forcing residents to flee amidst a terrifying storm of smoke, flames, and strong winds.
“It felt like we were in the middle of a tornado,” Borrow recalled, as reported by NBC. “The smoke, even with an N-95 mask on, was unbearable. I honestly thought I might not make it.” She described the feeling of being completely overwhelmed.
Video footage showed frantic evacuations as the gusty winds pushed flames perilously close to homes, enveloping neighborhoods in dense smoke.
Borrow noted how dire the situation had become, stating she could hardly see her neighbors trying to escape from the unfolding disaster. “I couldn’t even see out of the driveway,” she mentioned, adding that cars were colliding in the chaos.
Another resident faced her worst fear when the fire began advancing directly toward her property from a nearby ravine. “Our biggest worry was that it would start there and come straight to our house,” Borrow expressed. “And, unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened.”
In the midst of the frantic atmosphere, firefighters managed to protect most of Borrow’s home and property, though a small cabin on the hill was lost. She downplayed the damage, feeling it was minor compared to the emotional toll of the event.
“It’s astonishing how quickly everything can change. It really puts things in perspective,” she reflected. “Suddenly, nothing else mattered; all I could focus on was getting my pet to safety.”
The Sandy Fire ignited Monday morning and rapidly expanded to over 1,600 acres by Tuesday night, prompting evacuation orders in some parts of Simi Valley. At least one home was confirmed destroyed as firefighting efforts continued.
