Younger Conservatives Divided Over Trump’s Iran Conflict

Young conservative activists, who were strong supporters of President Trump’s agenda not long ago, are now beginning to show signs of division as the tensions with Iran continue. This split is becoming clearer within Turning Point USA (TPUSA), particularly after a rally where many young conservatives gathered in support of Trump at America Fest. While some leaders and activists are leaning towards anti-war voices like Tucker Carlson, others are still backing the president.

Recently, six branch leaders shared their concerns regarding Trump’s approach to the Iran conflict. According to reports, his previous commitments to avoid initiating new wars have dramatically changed. This is particularly relevant now as the 2024 campaign approaches.

Steve Cortez, a former adviser to Trump and a commentator aligned with the America First movement, suggested that while young voters had been a growing demographic for Trump, their enthusiasm appears to be waning, influenced by both economic struggles and the ongoing situation with Iran.

“In 2024, it seemed like young people and Hispanics were two of Trump’s most promising groups,” he noted. “But now, we’re seeing a complete shift.”

Cortez attributed this shift primarily to inflation and economic issues, but suggested that the conflict in Iran has compounded those factors, making it harder for young voters to stay supportive.

Michael McKenna, a Republican strategist, echoed these sentiments, stating that while the polling might not reflect the backlash just yet, the ongoing conflict is diverting Trump’s attention away from the core issues that helped him gain support in the first place.

“While there’s not much in the survey data showing dissatisfaction, there’s definitely a mood shift,” McKenna commented. “Voters expected the president to focus on the economy and immigration—it’s quite clear what they wanted.”

He further clarified that the Iran conflict detracts from the economic progress, suggesting that rising gas prices pose a significant barrier to growth.

The split among young conservatives surfaced several months after TPUSA conducted a public opinion survey, which still indicated broad support for Trump. This survey pointed to Vice President J.D. Vance as a leading figure for the 2028 election, showing that Trump’s influence remains strong, despite the emerging conflict.

Younger voters were instrumental in Trump’s earlier success, and recent comparisons show a strong support for him, with 56% of this demographic backing him, according to TuftsNow data.

Many young conservatives feel a sense of betrayal over the shift towards war. Rebecca Bushmire from TPUSA shared, “We were assured no new wars would be started.”

Another young conservative leader, Conor Darby, expressed concern for financial stability over military actions, emphasizing that the well-being of American citizens should come before foreign conflicts.

Interestingly, polls indicate that younger Americans are generally more skeptical of military actions in Iran compared to their older counterparts. For instance, a Marquette Law School poll found that 61% of those under 35 oppose military interventions in the region.

The White House has countered these sentiments, with Press Secretary Olivia Wales stating that the president is doing what is necessary to protect the country from threats posed by the Iranian regime. She claimed Trump has adhered to his campaign promise to prevent the Iranian regime from seeking nuclear weapons, and his decisions are made with the interests of the American people in mind.

Cortez noted that young voters initially supported Trump’s America First policy, which promoted restraint and a more pragmatic foreign policy. “They were really drawn to that vision, but now it feels like we’re stepping away from it,” he remarked.
