Trump to Campaign with Rep. Lawler Amidst Amnesty Discussions
President Donald Trump is set to join Republican New York Representative Mike Lawler for a campaign event on Friday. Interestingly, this comes after Trump had previously aligned with Democrats to advocate for extensive amnesty legislation.
According to White House press secretary Liz Houston, the campaign will emphasize themes such as affordability and tax cuts, as reported by The Hill. Lawler has been active in trying to revive the Dignity Act, which aims to provide a large-scale amnesty program for undocumented immigrants, along with introducing various bills supporting Israel.
Lawler expressed his belief in April that the Dignity Act enjoys significant bipartisan support. He described the bill as a comprehensive approach to tackling illegal immigration, reforming the asylum process, and creating humane solutions for long-term undocumented immigrants, while also protecting American workers and keeping industries strong and competitive.
Although Trump has voiced opposition to amnesty, the administration has not shifted its support for the Dignity Act.
Supporters from the Democratic side include Texas Representatives Henry Cuellar and Veronica Escobar, New York’s Adriano Espaillat, and Massachusetts’s Jake Auchincloss.
In addition, Lawler and Democratic New Jersey Congressman Josh Gottheimer have criticized “anti-Semitic rhetoric” in a resolution issued on April 29, calling out specific podcasters for their comments about Jews and Israel. They have also proposed a bill aimed at criminalizing boycotts against Israel, which faced pushback from some within the Republican Party who argued it could infringe on First Amendment rights.
Earlier, Lawler and Gottheimer introduced the Bunker Buster Act in July, which could permit Israel to use certain military resources previously authorized by Trump against Iranian facilities. This act had initially been presented back in 2022 but did not progress in the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
Concerns about rising anti-Semitism on college campuses prompted Lawler, alongside Democratic State Representative Ritchie Torres, to propose the University Oversight and Legal Updates Mandating Bias Investigations and Accountability (Columbia) Act in April 2024. This initiative would empower the U.S. Department of Education to appoint external monitors at institutions that fail to adequately tackle anti-Semitism.
Neither Lawler’s office nor the White House responded to requests for further comments.
