Spanish Director Pedro Almodóvar Says 'The U.S. Is Not a Democracy Right Now' as Voters Take Part in Primaries

Pedro Almodovar’s Remarks at Cannes Film Festival

Spanish director Pedro Almodovar expressed strong concerns about the state of democracy in the United States during a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival, coinciding with American primaries in various states. He stated, “The United States is not a democracy right now,” and noted a noticeable lack of protests during the Oscars against the war and the Trump administration.

Almodovar mused about the rarity of outspoken voices, mentioning his friend Javier Bardem as one who has spoken out, specifically calling to “Liberate Palestine.” He emphasized that “people are obviously very scared,” and reiterated his belief that the current state of U.S. democracy is far from ideal.

He remarked on the “heartbreaking irony” that democracy, through legitimate voting, has enabled what he sees as a totalitarian regime, calling it a paradox that is deeply troubling. When asked about potential career risks from his comments, Almodovar stated he felt “not at all” concerned, even suggesting that Europeans might enjoy greater freedom of speech than Americans.

Continuing, he expressed a sense of security in his convictions, saying, “I don’t feel much fear.” He elaborated that in Spain, there is a willingness to openly condemn government actions, citing the stance on Gaza as an example of Spain’s readiness to denounce such conflicts.

Reflecting on his experience in New York for the Chaplin Prize, Almodovar noted uncertainty about addressing a country governed by “narcissistic authority” lacking respect for human rights, but he felt emboldened knowing he could return to Spain after expressing his views. “It makes it easier to articulate how you feel in the moment,” he said, adding, “I’m a foreigner.”

Additionally, during the Cannes event for his film, bitter christmas, Almodovar asserted that “Europe must never submit to President Trump.”
