Pressure Increases on Mexican President as a Third Official Turns Over to U.S. Facing Drug Charges

Mexico’s President Turns to Nationalist Language, Asks Trump to Stay Away

Mexican Government’s Stance Amid U.S. Drug Cartel Investigations

President Claudia Sheinbaum and her administration are asserting that there’s no proof from the U.S. government implicating Sinaloa Governor Ruben Rocha Moya and nine of his aides in connections to the Sinaloa Cartel. Notably, three of the officials have reportedly crossed into the United States to surrender.

This situation arises amid escalating tensions between the U.S. and Mexico, largely due to Mexico’s stance of protecting drug cartels rather than seeking to dismantle them. Recently, reports surfaced that Mexican Senator Enrique Inzunza Cazares traveled to San Diego and surrendered to U.S. authorities. He is facing federal criminal charges in New York related to drug conspiracy.

Despite the surrenders of some officials, Sheinbaum remains resolute. In a speech this weekend, she emphasized that no outside government would undermine Mexico’s ongoing transformation. This seems to be a direct counter to U.S. pressure regarding organized crime and corruption issues.

These developments complicate Sheinbaum’s position further. Even while she claims there’s no evidence of misconduct, the officials she defends are seeking refuge in the U.S. Justice Department. This has led some politicians to sarcastically suggest that the suspected drug traffickers are showing more common sense than those in Sheinbaum’s MORENA party.

Earlier last week, Gerardo Merida Sánchez, a former public security secretary from Sinaloa, also surrendered to U.S. authorities at the Nogales port of entry. He faces charges in a U.S. federal court for drug conspiracy and weapon-related offenses. Following his arrest, he was brought to a federal court in New York, awaiting trial. It’s reported that he not only safeguarded the Sinaloa Cartel but also would warn them of impending military operations.

Reports also indicate that another public servant has surrendered to U.S. authorities, though details remain unconfirmed. Former Sinaloa finance secretary, Enrique Díaz Vega, is said to have traveled to New York to negotiate an agreement with prosecutors. He’s believed to have played a significant role in managing cartel funds for Rocha Moya.
