Millie Alcock Responds to Critics Ahead of Supergirl Release

Newly cast Supergirl star Millie Alcock has addressed the backlash she faces online, particularly from those criticizing her past comments. She noted that many of these detractors operate under anonymous accounts, some identifying as “a father of four and a Christian.”

In a recent interview, Alcock shared her thoughts on the criticism surrounding her new role in DC Studios’ Supergirl movie. She’s learned, she says, to tune out the online hostility that comes with being in the spotlight.

“But I mean, whose opinion do you really care about?” she mused. “If you’re offending the right kind of people, there’s no problem.”

The actress suggested that a lot of the negativity aimed at her stems from users with no real identity behind their profiles. “It’s funny to see accounts without pictures, or someone using a name followed by ‘Christian, father of four children,'” she observed.

Alcock also sympathizes with why people connect emotionally to celebrities and series. She believes a general distrust of institutions drives people to seek emotional validation in online communities.

“It creates an unhealthy relationship with the other person,” she commented, cautioning that such dynamics can lead to disappointment.

Earlier this year, Alcock expressed her concerns about the scrutiny female actors face in major series. She highlighted the unique challenges women encounter just by existing in that space, noting that their roles often attract unnecessary criticism.

“We’ve become very comfortable with having this weird ownership over women’s bodies,” she said during a discussion about her experiences in HBO’s House of the Dragon and the upcoming DC films.

Alcock, who initially gained recognition for her portrayal of young Rhaenyra Targaryen, has built quite a profile. After her success in House of the Dragon, she appeared in Sirens and subsequently secured the lead role in Supergirl.

She candidly shared her fears about audience reactions to the reboot of such a beloved superhero franchise. “Of course it’s scary,” she admitted in March. “I hope people like me and the movie, but ultimately, that’s out of my control.”

Supergirl is set to release in theaters in June, and many are eager to see how Alcock interprets the iconic character in this new iteration of the DC Universe.
