Maine voters divided over Democrat Graham Platner's contentious remarks

Maine Voters Split Over Graham Platner’s Senate Campaign Controversies

Maine voters find themselves at odds regarding the implications of various controversies surrounding Democratic candidate Graham Platner as the November elections approach.

For some, remarks he’s made about sensitive topics like sexual abuse and race, which originated before his Senate campaign, are merely a reflection of the burdens he’s shouldered from his military background. “It’s unfortunate, but after going through something so stressful, I can’t criticize him too harshly,” said Joe, a voter from Shapley.

Conversely, others argue that his statements reveal a troubling character. Tina, a Sanford voter, shared her disbelief: “I mean, can we really justify voting for someone who says things like that?”

Platner is positioned to be the Democratic challenger against incumbent Republican Sen. Susan Collins, who has held her seat since 1997. Democrats, encouraged by the potential to unseat moderates in shifting states, see an opportunity ahead. After former Governor Janet Mills withdrew from the race, Platner has emerged as the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination in the upcoming primary.

Despite his campaign strategy, many worry that Platner’s past remarks could alienate voters and inadvertently aid Collins in securing a sixth term. In a notable Reddit post resurfaced recently, Platner had controversially remarked that rape victims should take more responsibility for their situations from 2013.

Marg, a Sanford resident, expressed her strong discontent: “Such comments are not just offensive to me—they represent a larger problem. He certainly won’t get my support.”

For some voters, the distressing nature of his comments about sexual assault resonates deeply. Kristin, a survivor, noted, “I get that people can mess up, but honestly, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.” Meanwhile, Ray from Lebanon views the comments as secondary, emphasizing Platner’s working-class appeal: “He cares about us. That’s what matters to me.”

Others like Kathy dismissed the comments altogether, shrugging off the notion that political figures are anything other than imperfect. “It’s just what you expect nowadays,” she stated.

Maine’s primary elections are set for June 9, leading up to the general election on November 3. Earlier in his campaign, Platner apologized for a controversial Reddit post and explained his decision to cover a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol—a reminder of his past actions he misinterpreted during his time in the military.

Republican groups have already targeted Platner with advertisements showcasing his past comments and past tattoos. In a recent interview, he responded to these attacks, asserting that they will ultimately backfire. “People in Maine see through this negativity,” he said. “They want to focus on more pressing issues than just attack ads.”
