House Republicans Express Frustration Over Senate’s Immigration Budget Moves
House Republicans are reportedly displeased with Senate counterparts for attempting to nullify immigration enforcement budget reconciliation without holding a vote.
Republican Representative Byron Donald from Florida expressed his discontent, stating, “The Senate has proven once again that they don’t even know how to properly do their job.” His sentiments reflect a broader sense of frustration among party members.
Another Republican, Tim Burchett from Tennessee, echoed similar feelings, commenting, “It’s upsetting and extremely frustrating. They need to work. They don’t want to work…If the House will do it, I will do it too.”
Senate Republicans Unhappy with DOJ’s ‘Anti-Weaponization’ Fund
There’s considerable anger among Senate Republicans over the Trump administration’s recent establishment of the Anti-Weaponization Fund alongside border security funding issues.
Rep. Mike Flood from Nebraska noted his hopefulness, saying, “I’m frustrated that it’s not done, but I’m hopeful that when they come back, they’ll be able to get it done, and then we’ll get it done.”
The White House has been reached out to for comment. Earlier this April, former President Trump indicated a desire to have a funding bill for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Border Patrol ready by June 1.
The Justice Department recently announced the Anti-Weaponization Fund. They claimed this fund, established as part of a settlement agreement, is meant to address claims of individuals who have been wronged legally.
Clarifications on Funding and Senate Discussions
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche met with Senate Republicans to discuss this issue. Reports suggest that over 20 Republican senators have sought clarity regarding potential guardrails for the fund, especially concerning past convictions related to the January 6, 2021 riot.
There’s ongoing conversation about how to frame these guardrails in the settlement package, considering the Senate Judiciary Committee plays a significant role in the process.
According to a spokesperson for the Justice Department, there were “healthy discussions about the settlement” during the meeting with Blanche.
Importantly, the spokesperson stressed that the Anti-Weaponization Fund is separate from the settlement, assuring that no funds related to the settlement would be allocated to it.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “I gave up a lot of money to allow the just-announced anti-weaponization fund to advance… Instead, I’m helping people who have been horribly abused by the evil, corrupt, and weaponized Biden administration finally get justice!”
