Fire Claims Two Lives in Brooklyn Apartment
On Saturday, a tragic fire swept through a long-standing apartment building in Flatbush, Brooklyn, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, a police report and neighbors indicated.
The victims, identified as an 86-year-old woman and a 65-year-old man, resided on the second floor of a building located on Nostrand Street near Cortelyou Street. The fire erupted in the early morning hours.
Additionally, two women, aged 82 and 40, were transported to Downstate University Hospital with severe injuries. Fortunately, officials remarked that they were expected to survive.
A resident from the neighboring building, who shares a wall with the affected apartment, recounted hearing a dispute just prior to the fire’s outbreak. Edwin Sabaille, 48, noted that loud voices were audible around 5:45 a.m., though he couldn’t quite grasp the conversation as it was in Spanish.
After initially drifting back to sleep, he was awakened again about 30 minutes later by shouts outside.
“I heard someone yelling, ‘There’s a fire in here,’” he explained. He rushed to his window and spotted significant flames, prompting him to evacuate his family and pets immediately.
Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control by 7:38 a.m., and an investigation into its cause is ongoing, according to the FDNY.
As for the victims, their identification has not been formally released pending family notification, but neighbors recognized them as a beloved mother and son duo who had lived in the community for over 40 years.
Local residents shared that Maria had been bedridden for almost two decades, receiving care from her son, Jose. People in the neighborhood mentioned that Jose was involved with coaching the Bonnies Little League baseball team, while Maria worked as a seamstress.
Jonathan Ortiz, 47, who operates a corner store, noted that Jose would stop by daily to purchase meals for both himself and his mother. “He would always buy her soup and whatever she could eat. He really took good care of her,” he said.
“The neighborhood is heartbroken,” he added. “Everyone is devastated. The whole community feels the loss.”
This fire incident occurred just a day after another tragic event on Staten Island, where at least one person died, and two firefighters suffered serious injuries following an explosion at a dry dock, injuring around 30 individuals.
The reason behind the Staten Island explosion remains unknown.
