CLEVELAND — Mike Brown had something important on his mind.
When nobody brought it up, he decided to speak up himself.
After wrapping up the final question at the Sunday press conference, he casually mentioned OG Anunoby’s recent selection to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team.
“Before I go, I want to add one more thing,” Brown said. “Guys, take note. These players are incredible, and I really don’t mean to disrespect anyone, but we have a fantastic OG who got overlooked. He should’ve made the first-team All-Defense. For sure. His versatility is a huge asset to our team—we rank among the top five defensively. You know, that versatility is something people often overlook. They talk about [Karl-Anthony Towns] and Jalen [Brunson], but let me tell you, the impact he has is extraordinary. I hope the voters make the right decision next time. Sure, being on the second team is a good recognition, but it was a mistake.”
Anunoby echoed his coach’s sentiments.
“It’s nice to be recognized,” Anunoby shared on Sunday. “Always feels good when the coaches and media acknowledge your efforts. Second team is fine, but I was definitely aiming for that first team spot. I really thought I should have made it, honestly. But hey, second team isn’t too bad.”
The day before, Towns also talked about Anunoby after their Game 3 victory against the Cavaliers.
After both players finished their interviews, and no one had mentioned Anunoby’s accolade, Towns stepped in.
“Why isn’t anyone asking OG about being on the second team? He’s all-defense, for sure,” Towns remarked. “He’s one of the best defenders out there, but he wasn’t acknowledged as he should have been.”
This marks Anunoby’s second year being named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team. Before the season began, he expressed frustration over being overlooked for far too long and was particularly vocal about his aim to break into the first team as well as aspire for the Defensive Player of the Year award.
His concern is that opponents tend to avoid him, leading to fewer blocks and steals, which usually catch the eyes of voters.
“He totally deserves it,” said Jalen Brunson. “His defensive skills are outstanding. Being able to guard every position on the floor is crucial for our team. Any recognition is great, but honestly, I think he’s a first-team player.”
