Fatal suicide explosion strikes a train route in Pakistan, leaving at least 23 dead

A suicide bomber targeted a passenger train in Pakistan on Sunday morning, resulting in the deaths of at least 23 people and injuries to around 70, according to reports.

The explosion took place in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province, when a car packed with explosives detonated near the tracks as the train was passing, derailing two cars and igniting a fire.

Balochistan has long faced ongoing insurgency issues involving various separatist and extremist groups. The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a group advocating for the province’s independence from Pakistan, has claimed responsibility for this attack, stating they aimed for a train loaded with security personnel.

Reports indicate that the train was transporting military members and their families as they traveled from Quetta to Peshawar for the Eid celebrations. While Associated Press noted that the BLA targeted a train with security personnel, it’s also worth mentioning that this region is generally known for its stringent security measures.

The explosion was powerful enough to send shockwaves throughout the area. Eyewitness accounts and social media images describe how two train cars overturned and erupted into flames, sending thick smoke billowing into the air.

A nearby building also incurred heavy damage, and numerous parked vehicles were impacted as well. Many victims were transported to local hospitals, with about 20 reported in critical condition, as stated by medical professionals.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif denounced the attack, calling it a “despicable act of terrorism” and assured that those responsible would face justice.

“I strongly condemn the heinous bomb blast near Chaman Fatak, Quetta, which led to tragic losses and injuries. Such acts of terrorism cannot weaken the resolve of Pakistan’s people. We remain committed to eradicating terrorism in all its forms,” he said. He also extended condolences to the victims’ families and expressed hope for the injured’s swift recovery.

Balochistan’s Chief Minister, Sarfraz Bugti, accused the attackers of being backed by Indian proxies aimed at undermining Pakistan. This perspective stems from the long-standing conflict over Kashmir, although India has consistently rejected such claims.

Bugti stated, “Fitna al-Hindustan terrorists are showcasing their barbarity by attacking innocent civilians. There will be no compassion for those who harm the innocent. Let our enemies know there’s no sanctuary remaining for terrorists in Balochistan. We will pursue terrorists and their supporters relentlessly until they are brought to justice.”

According to reports, the BLA is increasingly conducting suicide attacks targeting Pakistan’s security forces and infrastructure, with a notable bombing at a Balochistan train station in 2024 that killed at least 26 people, including soldiers.
