Gary Sinise Bids Farewell to Hollywood
After many years in the spotlight, Gary Sinise is stepping away from Hollywood. In a recent conversation with Fox News Digital, he shared that through his foundation, he and Wells Fargo are helping wounded U.S. Army veterans by providing them with vehicles. During an event this month, he revealed that leaving California marked a significant change in his life.
“When I retired from acting in 2019… I was doing okay financially. My investments were solid,” Sinise explained. This came after a tough period: his son Mac battled a rare form of cancer beginning in 2018 and unfortunately passed away in 2024. “Mac fought hard for several years, and I was right there with him. My wife faced her own challenges too, and my dad had a stroke that led to his passing in 2021. My aging mother needed my attention as well. I felt I had to prioritize my family during that time,” he said.
Reflecting on life in California, Sinise admitted, “I began to wonder what would happen if I decided not to work anymore. The cost of living in California can be staggering—gas prices, property taxes… It was a lot.” He pointed out how their home, once perfect for a growing family, wasn’t necessary anymore.
Famous for his portrayal of Lt. Dan in Forrest Gump, Sinise revealed that the family ultimately chose to move to Nashville, a place they’ve felt connected to for years. “I started thinking more about the quality of life,” he noted. “I could get gas for $2.59 a gallon here, while in California it shot up to $5.79. Why the difference?”
“I don’t want to funnel all my money into California taxes. I’d rather ensure my kids benefit from it in the future.”
He went on to voice his bewilderment regarding California’s resources yet high expenses. “I appreciate the lower gas prices and not being hit with a hefty tax burden here. Staying out of the fast spending cycle allows me to save for what’s next. I want to maximize what I can pass on to my children,” he added.
While he remains open to acting opportunities, Sinise expressed no regret about leaving the industry. “Stepping back in 2019 to focus on my family was the right decision, and I stand by that,” he emphasized.
Looking back at his career, he shared, “I never predicted this trajectory. Service to others has become as important to me as performance.” His commitment to veterans, evident throughout his life, intensified after the events of September 11, 2001.
Sinise founded the Gary Sinise Foundation in 2011, aiming to make a long-lasting impact. “When people become part of our community, they become family,” he stated. “We strive to support them ongoing, not just in one-off moments.”
In addition to his foundation’s work, which culminated in a recent national concert, Sinise is dedicated to continuing his son’s musical legacy. “We’ve worked on bringing his musical ideas to fruition. I miss him deeply,” he reflected.
Sinise also mentioned that proceeds from his son’s posthumous album would support the foundation’s ongoing mission for military members and their families. “That was Mac’s wish,” he concluded.
