Support for Short-Term Iran Deal from Rep. Massie
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) expressed his support for a short-term agreement with Iran on Sunday after President Donald Trump indicated that the deal was “mostly done.” Massie pointed out that Americans are already experiencing economic challenges due to the ongoing conflict.
“Yes, I support that!” Massie stated during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” when asked about the potential deal. “I don’t know what the terms will be, but if Lindsey Graham and Ted Cruz collided last night, it’s probably going to be a pretty decent agreement.”
Massie, known for his opposition to U.S. military interventions abroad, mentioned the increasing costs of domestic fuel and agriculture as factors influencing his stance.
“My constituents are hurting,” he noted. “Gasoline prices are around $5 a gallon, while diesel is hitting about $6. The farmers in Kentucky can’t even afford the fertilizer for their crops.”
Following a recent primary defeat, Massie defended his voting record, which he attributes to his independent stance in Congress. He remarked, “I’ve always done this job the way the people want. I read the bills. I’ve never given voting cards to the Speaker, the President, or the Freedom Caucus. My votes are for the people, not the party.”
Massie indicated that his collaborations with Democrats, such as working with Rep. Ro Khanna on related legislation, made him a target in the political arena.
“I think the biggest issue I had with the establishment was showing that someone from the right can collaborate with someone from the left. That’s when they decided they had to get rid of me,” he explained.
He further claimed that outside spending in campaigns overwhelmed him, stating, “They haven’t managed to buy my vote for 14 years, so they just bought this seat instead. This was the most expensive election ever in Congressional primaries.”
Massie warned that the Republican Party risks alienating parts of Trump’s coalition, suggesting the party could face consequences leading up to the midterm elections. “More and more individuals on the right are dealing with a kind of ‘Trump Disappointment Syndrome’,” he said.
He criticized the Republican leadership’s approach to spending in Congress, especially opposing funding for projects backed by Trump. “The ballroom project is just a terrible waste,” he said, describing the proposed White House ballroom. “It feels like a slap in the face to the American people.”
Massie argued that economic issues should take precedence over unnecessary federal expenditures and foreign engagements, stating, “We operate like the Roman Empire. We’re extended too far overseas with foreign aid and bases. We’re spending money we don’t have while gas, rent, and food are too expensive for many to afford.”
As for the Iran deal, Trump mentioned on Truth Social that negotiations were “nearly done,” yet, as of Sunday morning, no official details had been provided.
Fox News Digital attempted to reach Sens. Ted Cruz and Lindsey Graham for further comments but did not receive an immediate reply.
