California gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer expressed strong support for transgender athletes participating in high school sports during a podcast released on Sunday. He argued that preventing these youth from competing would only worsen the emotional and mental health struggles they often face.
“I am completely in favor of transgender athletes in high school,” Steyer stated, adding, “When you understand the vulnerability and stress that transgender kids endure—almost half of whom have attempted suicide—you realize that excluding them from team sports isn’t the answer.”
Despite his encouraging views, Steyer has faced backlash, being labeled a dissident for allegedly supporting a “right-wing campaign” that targets transgender individuals unfairly.
“Let me be clear: this is not a large-scale epidemic,” he remarked. “It’s a right-wing effort to victimize those who are already vulnerable, and my heart goes out to the many who feel rejected and unaccepted.”
As he competes in a crowded Democratic field for the governorship, which awaits the conclusion of current Governor Gavin Newsom’s term, his stance aligns with other candidates. For instance, former U.S. Rep. Katie Porter emphasized that youth sports should focus on character-building and teamwork, rather than merely determining the best athletes.
Xavier Becerra recognized the importance of protecting gender identity in the current laws, advocating for ongoing support for individuals under these policies.
Other Democratic candidates have shared their thoughts as well. San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan has had mixed feelings, criticizing the politicization of the issue while also acknowledging that fairness can be a concerning factor when it comes to mixed-gender situations in sports.
“That’s a conversation we would have, and you can imagine that it would be unfair,” he noted, expressing a desire not to stigmatize differences or use the debate for political gain.
Antonio Villaraigosa downplayed the issue itself but maintained an opposition to discrimination; he believes that biological males who have gone through puberty shouldn’t compete in women’s sports. Meanwhile, other candidates like Betty Yee advocate for promoting equity alongside participation.
In contrast, Republicans Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco are in favor of overturning existing laws supporting transgender participation in sports. This divide on the issue highlights the ongoing debate over fairness and rights in athletics.
