Upcoming Republican Primary Runoff in Texas

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and U.S. Senator John Cornyn are set to compete in a crucial Republican primary runoff this Tuesday.

The matchup arises because neither candidate achieved the vital 50% majority during the March primary, which had a crowded field.

The stakes have risen significantly since that primary, turning the race into a significant showdown for the future of the Republican Party in Texas. It’s a clash of traditional Cornyn supporters versus Paxton’s more hardline base.

Things shifted dramatically last week when Donald Trump endorsed Paxton, labeling him a “true MAGA warrior.” This endorsement has likely dealt a heavy blow to Cornyn’s campaign just before voters make their decisions.

“I fully support Ken Paxton to be the next U.S. senator from Texas. Ken Paxton will never let you down!” Trump announced on Truth Social.

On Sunday, Trump reiterated his position.

“Remember, Texas! Ken Paxton was a great attorney general, perhaps the best in the country. He was also fiercely loyal to your favorite president, while the Democrats failed miserably in their weaponization against him!” Trump stated.

A significant factor in Trump’s endorsement seems to stem from Paxton’s backing of the SAVE America Act, which mandates voter identification and proof of citizenship, while also imposing restrictions on mail-in voting. Trump criticized Cornyn’s attempts to advance the bill as inadequate.

“Ken’s opponents have shown disloyalty to me as President and haven’t fought hard enough for the American Rescue Act,” Trump remarked. “Vote for Ken Paxton on Tuesday. He will never let you down!”

The outcome of this Republican runoff is crucial, as the winner will move on to the general election in November, facing Democratic candidate state Rep. James Talarico, who secured the party’s nomination in March after a robust primary.

This upcoming November election could be historic. If Cornyn loses to Paxton, Texas will send a freshman senator to Washington for the first time in over 13 years.

On the flip side, Talarico faces an uphill battle; no Democrat has won a U.S. Senate seat in Texas in more than 30 years, dating back to 1988.
