Trump’s backing boosts GOP voter support for Paxton in Texas runoff

Intense Texas conflict intensifies as Cornyn gains new support

Texas Senate Runoff Highlights Trump’s Influence

Dallas—In the Dallas area and its swiftly expanding suburbs, Republican voters often mention President Donald Trump’s backing of Ken Paxton as a key reason for their support of the Texas Attorney General in the Senate runoff against Sen. John Cornyn.

This election is crucial, as Republicans seek to define the party’s future direction in Texas, particularly in suburban regions that are experiencing significant growth.

“Ken Paxton. Drop all three of us, 1, 2, 3, Paxton,” said Carolyn Harvey from Celina, Texas, referencing her group of supporters.

Another voter noted, “He’s going to be good for Trump. What’s good for Trump is good for us.”

The statements reflect the tension within the Texas Republican runoffs. Party members are torn between supporting Cornyn, a long-time incumbent, or rallying behind Paxton, who resonates strongly with MAGA supporters and aims to infuse Washington with more hardline conservatives, largely due to his close ties with Trump.

“Cornyn has historically been a strong contender, but Trump’s endorsement of Paxton carries a lot of weight,” said Frank Reeves, a medical transport driver in Dallas. “I’m confident we’ll back Paxton in November. As long as conservatives win, I’m okay with it.”

However, not every Republican voter said their choice would be solely based on Trump’s endorsement. Some acknowledged Cornyn’s vast experience in the Senate, while others expressed hesitation due to Paxton’s ongoing legal challenges and impeachment issues.

“I’m a bit disheartened. Paxton has stirred up quite a bit of controversy over the years,” commented one lifelong conservative voter.

Trump’s endorsement of Paxton earlier this year transformed what was expected to be a challenging contest into a highly scrutinized Senate race for the 2026 elections.

Paxton has worked to build a strong rapport with Trump and the MAGA movement, while Cornyn, despite his conservative record, has faced criticism from the party’s more extreme factions for seeking bipartisan solutions in D.C.

Paxton describes Cornyn as a relic of the traditional Republican establishment, suggesting a growing disconnection from the party base, particularly regarding issues like immigration and fiscal policy.

On the other hand, Cornyn has focused on his support for Trump while cautioning that Paxton’s ongoing legal issues could pose risks for the GOP in the general election.

The outcome may hinge on suburban voters in places like Dallas, many of whom seem to already feel settled in their choice, influenced by Trump’s support for Paxton.
