Knicks Fans Celebrate Reaching NBA Finals
When the Knicks made it to the NBA Finals for the first time in 27 years, there was quite a scene outside Madison Square Garden, though it wasn’t without incidents—six fans ended up in handcuffs.
A large group of Knicks supporters gathered outside, filling the area with energy reminiscent of the late ’90s. They climbed telephone poles, blocked traffic, and jumped over police barriers, defying orders to leave, as law enforcement reported.
Authorities stated that some fans were issued citations for disorderly conduct and were processed at the NYPD’s Midtown South Precinct.
Footage captured during the celebration showed a teenager climbing a telephone pole, only to be arrested just after landing. This prompted shouts from the crowd, demanding his release and chanting “Boo!”
In another video, bystanders were seen standing on the marquee of the iconic arena, with one voice rising above the others saying, “Go to jail!”
The Knicks fans were in high spirits, especially after the team secured their spot in the championships with a commanding 130-93 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers at Rocket Arena.
One fan exclaimed, “This is amazing! I’ve been waiting for this for years. I love Jalen Brunson,” referring to the Knicks guard who was named the series MVP.
Despite attempts by the NYPD to cancel the annual outdoor viewing party for the game, a lively crowd packed the Garden. The NYPD had sought to mitigate issues caused by fans clogging the sidewalks during this historical stretch for the team.
Due to growing concerns over disturbances at outdoor game events, the city’s street permitting department denied MSG’s permit for the Game 4 gathering. A source indicated that police would only allow fans to participate under calmer conditions.
A police spokesperson confirmed that because of various problems, including six arrests during prior games, the NYPD would no longer support outdoor parties at the stadium. However, they might consider alternative venue requests, like Central Park’s SummerStage.
In contrast to the chaos outside Madison Square Garden, no arrests were made near Radio City Music Hall, where fans donned their orange and blue for a viewing party, maintaining an upbeat atmosphere.
