Chemical leak evacuations in Orange County conclude as officials declare no further risk to the public.

After a hazardous materials situation led to widespread evacuations, many residents in Southern California were finally able to return home Tuesday night. Officials reported that the issues linked to chemical tanks at an aerospace facility had been resolved.

This incident revolved around a 7,000-gallon tank containing methyl methacrylate, a toxic and highly flammable substance, located at GKN Aerospace in Garden Grove.

It all started last Thursday and quickly turned into a significant safety crisis, prompting extensive evacuations throughout the area.

At the height of the crisis, approximately 60,000 individuals from Garden Grove and its surroundings were ordered to evacuate, as authorities warned of potential explosions, fire hazards, and chemical risks.

By Tuesday night, officials confirmed that the threat had passed, and there was no longer any risk of explosions, leaks, or fire hazards, according to the Orange County Fire Department.

“All evacuation orders related to the Garden Grove hazardous materials incident have been lifted,” the department stated.

Currently, Western Avenue remains closed between Garden Grove Streets and Chapman.

While most evacuation orders were lifted on Monday, around 16,000 residents were still unable to return home due to lingering concerns about fire and explosion risks, which have now been cleared.

The incident raised broader concerns among residents regarding the storage of hazardous chemicals at the Garden Grove facility, situated in a city with a population of about 171,000, located roughly 55 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

During a community meeting on Tuesday, frustrated residents sought answers from local officials and underscored the need for a comprehensive review.

Mayor Stephanie Klopfenstein announced that investigations will be initiated at city, state, and federal levels.

Legal action has been initiated against GKN Aerospace, with eight lawsuits filed on behalf of 70 individuals.

The company stands accused of negligence in connection with the emergency that necessitated the evacuation of tens of thousands.
