Gingrich on Trump’s Potential Impact This November
In a recent episode of “Pod Force One,” former House Speaker Newt Gingrich suggested that if President Trump can manage to lower gas prices to around $3 per gallon, it could set the stage for Republicans to achieve “the biggest off-year election in modern times” this November.
Speaking to The Post’s Miranda Devine, Gingrich emphasized the necessity for gas prices to start decreasing by “around the Fourth of July” to avert a tough midterm election on November 3. He added that Trump would need to “put on his candidate hat” for the party to succeed.
“If you tell us the price of gas on Labor Day, we can talk about the election with a lot of confidence,” Gingrich remarked. He argued that if gas prices drop into the $3 range and continue to decline, it would likely enhance Republican chances in the upcoming elections.
Currently, Democrats hold a lead of 7.6 percentage points over Republicans in national polling data. However, Gingrich advised caution when interpreting polls.
The national average price for regular gasoline recently hit $4.49 per gallon, a slight drop from the previous week, according to AAA.
Gingrich, who played a pivotal role in the 1994 Republican revolution, also stated that Trump’s “one big beautiful bill” should be implemented by the time voters head to the polls this fall.
“Growth might reach 5% or 6% by this fall,” he said, predicting that this would result in job creation and wage increases outpacing inflation, allowing the party to regain control in a democratic way.
He also remarked on the challenges facing the Democratic Party, describing it as “weak,” “too woke,” and “too liberal.” This, he believes, may lead to significant consequences, reminiscent of the situation during George McGovern’s campaign in 1972.
Addressing oil exports, Gingrich noted that for prices to decrease, the president would need to ensure that the Strait of Hormuz remains open for crude oil shipments.
“As long as we keep the Straits open, we can fight Iran indefinitely,” he stated. He characterized Trump as “very smart,” suggesting that the American public may be more accepting of military actions that don’t result in visible casualties.
Gingrich expressed concern that the domestic impacts of overseas engagements need to be minimized to maintain public support.
Since Iran’s blockade of the Strait on February 28, coinciding with Operation Epic Fury, global energy prices surged, with oil exceeding $100 per barrel.
The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial route, seeing one-fifth to one-fourth of the world’s offshore oil transit through it. US warships have intervened to prevent Iranian tankers from passing through, limiting shipping traffic during the conflict.
In recent discussions, Trump administration officials sought to confirm terms for a peace agreement with Iran, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned that the strait would need to be opened “one way or another.”
Rubio insisted that the straits must be “open, toll-free, and unobstructed.” He stressed the importance of implementing any agreement immediately upon resolution.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump asserted that any deal with Iran would either be “a great deal for everyone or no deal at all,” suggesting a readiness to escalate military actions if necessary.
