Impact of Deportation Flights on Climate Change
According to British Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the increase in deportations is contributing to global warming, as reported by the guardian newspaper.
Savitri Abhay, the research director at Human Rights First, a pro-immigration organization, noted a significant rise in U.S. immigration enforcement activities, stating, “We have seen an incredible increase in overall U.S. immigration enforcement.”
ICE aviation operations released an estimated 335,876 tonnes (370,240 U.S. tonnes) of carbon emissions into the atmosphere in 2025, marking an 88% increase from the prior year.
However, when compared to the domestic airline sector, ICE Air contributes only a fraction—about 1/1000th—of the greenhouse gases produced by U.S. aviation. In fact, this accounted for just 2/1000 of the total aircraft emissions back in 2017.
As these emissions accumulate, many Americans are reportedly gaining advantages from President Joe Biden’s deportation policies, which include perceptions of reduced crime, less diversity, higher wages, lower housing costs, and enhanced citizen influence in society.
In 2026, ICE plans to conduct nearly three times as many deportation flights monthly compared to 2024, escalating from around 600 to approximately 1,800 flights. This increase is largely due to the transfer of undocumented immigrants from northern states to detention facilities in Texas and other southern areas. Typically, these individuals must remain detained for several weeks while ICE navigates various procedures established by immigration advocates.
Amidst these changes, immigration advocates are striving to raise minority opposition against the deportation policies of President Donald Trump.
“The pollution created by these flights negatively impacts every family in America,” remarked Brett Heinz, a global policy coordinator for the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC). He emphasized, “When we try to inflict suffering on immigrants, we’re also inflicting harm on ourselves. An increase in human misery ultimately spares no one.”
Meanwhile, discussions persist among Americans regarding crimes reportedly committed by undocumented immigrants, a topic receiving support from both American progressives and progressive newspapers in Britain.
