Israel Increases Strikes on Lebanon, Urges 200,000 Residents to Leave

Intensified Israeli Operations in Lebanon

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on Tuesday plans to “intensify operations in Lebanon” aimed at establishing a broader “security buffer” against Hezbollah, the Iranian-supported militant group.

This announcement followed a meeting in Tel Aviv with Defense Minister Israel Katz and IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, where they discussed responses to ongoing Hezbollah attacks.

Hezbollah has been carrying out drone strikes from the northern bank of the river, utilizing advanced targeting systems that make interception challenging. In response, the IDF is reportedly gearing up to enhance defenses against the growing threat of these drones.

On the same day, the IDF also issued an evacuation order for Tyre and its suburbs in Lebanon, which is Lebanon’s fifth-largest city with about 200,000 residents. They stated the evacuation was crucial due to an impending attack on a Hezbollah command center in the area.

“As Hezbollah is breaching the ceasefire and targeting Israel, the IDF will inevitably take decisive action against them,” commented Avichai Adlai, the Israeli military’s Arabic spokesperson.

He also urged Tyre residents on social media to evacuate immediately to ensure their safety, advising them to move north of the Zafrani River.

Hezbollah responded on Wednesday by claiming its fighters engaged in close-quarters combat with Israeli forces in Zawtar al-Shakiya, a strategically important location sought by the IDF to fortify their security interests.

Earlier, Israel initiated a ground invasion of Lebanon after Hezbollah fired rockets into northern Israel. Having endured attacks for years, spurred by Iranian support, Israel aims to seize territory south of the Litani River and dismantle Hezbollah’s military capabilities.

Defense Minister Katz assured during the invasion that they are committed to ensuring the safety of settlements in the Galilee region.

Despite the U.S. imposing a ceasefire with Iran, Hezbollah has not ceased its attacks, and the idea of a long-term, annexed security zone remains a goal for Israel. The use of drones by Hezbollah has become particularly worrisome for Israeli forces operability in Lebanon.

In April, Israeli and Lebanese officials held face-to-face discussions for the first time in over three decades, primarily focused on the joint opposition against Hezbollah. However, Israel withdrew, uncertain if the Lebanese government could enforce disarmament, which Hezbollah strongly opposes. While Beirut is against the destructive Israeli actions, it simultaneously resents Hezbollah for provoking conflict.

Netanyahu appears to be anxious that a potential peace agreement between the U.S. and Iran might force a pause on military activities in Lebanon. Last Saturday, he reiterated Israel’s right to defend itself from all threats, including those originating from Lebanon, during a call with President Trump.

Netanyahu expressed gratitude for Trump’s steadfast support of Israel’s security, noting both leaders agreed that any final deal with Iran should eliminate nuclear threats, even if their perspectives on Hezbollah vary.

Concerns have emerged in Israel that Trump might settle for less than what was originally aimed for in terms of countering Iranian influence, particularly regarding a possible ceasefire with Hezbollah, which could hamper the IDF’s response capabilities against Iranian-directed threats.

With elections approaching, Netanyahu and Katz seem to be accelerating their operations in Lebanon; demonstrating clear progress could be critical for the Prime Minister’s political survival.

This week, the IDF conducted over 120 airstrikes in Lebanon, marking one of the most intense days of their campaign, targeting numerous Hezbollah strongholds. However, Lebanese media reported significant civilian casualties.

The Lebanese Ministry of Health announced that Israeli airstrikes resulted in at least 34 deaths, including four children, and many injuries. Among the deceased was a Lebanese soldier killed near Qaraun Dam, followed by two rescue workers killed while attempting to assist.

IDF officials stated their ground forces are undertaking targeted actions beyond established defense lines to neutralize imminent threats to Israeli civilians.

The area known as the Forward Defense Line, or Yellow Line, marks the boundary of the Lebanese territory Israel is intent on securing as a buffer zone.

Netanyahu emphasized the need for intensified operations, stating that the IDF is actively engaging with considerable ground forces to capture strategic sites, aiming to fortify the security buffer to safeguard northern Israeli communities.

He also mentioned implementing extensive efforts to tackle the threat from explosive drones.

Israeli reports indicate that Katz and Zamir have urged Netanyahu to green-light offensive operations beyond defensive lines to establish a buffer zone by removing Hezbollah’s tactical positions.

The U.S. government has given its nod to Israel’s escalation of actions against Hezbollah, albeit with a caveat against demolishing structures in Beirut. A senior Israeli official indicated that “targeted attacks in Beirut” are plausible if the opportunity presents itself.

While the IDF has operational freedom in southern Lebanon, they are cautious not to jeopardize Trump’s agreement with Iran.

Some planners within the IDF have expressed dissatisfaction over operational limitations, aware that Hezbollah can find sanctuary in Beirut, rendering the expansion of the buffer zone potentially ineffective in deterring drone assaults.

A senior military official stressed the urgent need for more robust responses to daily violations of Israeli sovereignty, noting that their current restraint is based on agreements with both the U.S. and Lebanon, but it’s becoming increasingly untenable without the capability to react to threats.

The IDF is also pursuing Hezbollah positions north of the Litani River and has requested that Lebanese civilians evacuate across this river amid the ongoing conflict.
