Police Carry Out Raid at Headquarters of Spain's Struggling Socialist Government

The already embattled government in Spain led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez faced another setback on Wednesday when specialized police arrived at the headquarters of the Socialist Party (PSOE). This follows a police operation that recently targeted the residences of former party leaders and associates, uncovering golf bags filled with cash and jewelry whose origins remain unclear.

On the same day, police entered the PSOE headquarters, seizing documents. This marks another chapter in ongoing investigations into multiple party officials who are facing allegations of embezzlement, misuse of influence, fraud related to campaign financing, and money laundering.

In response, both the PSOE and Sánchez expressed their willingness to cooperate with law enforcement and emphasized their respect for the judicial system. However, they also voiced their grievances about illegal activities, the judicial process, and media attempts perceived as targeting the government.

The Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported that the recent raid was part of a broader investigation, which is currently under secrecy, into a potential illicit financing scheme involving Venezuelan funds. This case is being pursued by the same court.

A police spokesperson confirmed that officers had indeed searched the ruling party’s political headquarters but did not disclose specific reasons. However, Euronews noted that this action was linked to a subpoena connected to former PSOE fixer Leyre Diez, along with allegations regarding payments associated with her. Diez was among five senior PSOE members arrested last December over undisclosed charges.

Diez spoke out on Wednesday night, attributing the police’s actions to “fake news” and maintaining her innocence. She voiced her frustrations, saying that she has already accounted for all her earnings.

The atmosphere surrounding the police raid took on a somewhat surreal tone when activists sent in a mariachi band to the PSOE headquarters to perform a mocking song. The piece, famous in ranchera tradition, derided those in power, calling them “dirty rats” and “scum of life.”

The PSOE released a statement indicating that, upon the arrival of staff on Wednesday morning, they received a “request for documents from the Fifth Chamber of the National High Court” in relation to a confidential process concerning illegal lending. The party affirmed its commitment to fully cooperating with the investigation and respecting the judicial process.

Sánchez has previously remarked on the political machinations of judges and the complexities of those trying to enact justice, a statement perhaps informed by the PSOE’s accusations that the judiciary is attempting to undermine allies of the party at the behest of far-right factions.

In earlier reports, searches were carried out at the home of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, a former PSOE leader and Prime Minister from 2004 to 2011, as part of investigations tied to alleged corruption during the airline bailout amid the pandemic. This situation has involved claims of money laundering, kickbacks, and influence peddling linked to Venezuelan interests. Authorities reportedly found significant jewelry in a safe in Zapatero’s office and cash hidden in a golf bag belonging to his associate Julio Martínez Martínez.

Recently, Madrid was the scene of large protests, where thousands took to the streets calling for the government’s resignation due to ongoing corruption claims. At one such demonstration, right-wing leader Santiago Abascal accused Sánchez’s supporters of serious criminal activity, declaring that Spain had become a “hostage to a corrupt mafia.”
