Tragedy Strikes as Bride-to-Be is Killed in Hit-and-Run

A family in Southern California is heartbroken and is seeking justice following the death of a bride who was hit by a hit-and-run driver while waiting at a bus stop in San Diego.

According to police, 27-year-old Katie Osorio was tragically struck when a car veered onto the sidewalk, where she was seated on a partially enclosed bench, waiting for a bus that would take her to a new job. The driver fled the scene.

The incident took place on Friday at the intersection of National Avenue and 35th Street in San Diego. Osorio was rushed to a hospital but later died from her injuries.

“Sadly, Katie was the victim of a hit-and-run accident while waiting at a bus stop in San Diego,” a note on a GoFundMe page for Katie stated. “She fought bravely to survive but unfortunately passed away. Our family is devastated by this sudden loss and is doing everything we can to honor her memory during this heartbreaking time.”

Katie’s cousin, Evelyn Osorio, shared that Katie was preparing to enroll in a nursing program and was engaged to be married in December.

“We’re planning a big wedding in Mexico City in December, and the civil ceremony is scheduled for July,” Evelyn mentioned.

Witnesses to the accident reportedly found Katie’s cell phone and contacted her family to inform them of the tragedy.

“People at the scene alerted us, and the driver turned around and attempted to walk away,” Evelyn recalled.

“Not stopping is a cruel act. We want justice for Katie—her name deserves to be remembered.”

Authorities later located the driver, identified as 41-year-old Asmar Elayat, who is employed as a deputy director of subsistence services in San Diego County. She was arrested and charged with multiple counts, including vehicular manslaughter.

The county expressed their sorrow over the incident, stating, “We are deeply saddened to learn of this tragic loss of life. Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and anyone grieving during this incredibly difficult time.”

Elayat has been released on bail and is scheduled for arraignment on June 1st. Details about any potential involvement of alcohol or drugs in the crash remain unclear.

The newspaper is in contact with local law enforcement and San Diego County for additional information.
