Cold Case Murder Arrest After Over 30 Years

In a significant development, authorities announced on Tuesday that they have charged a 70-year-old man in a cold case murder from more than three decades ago. The case of an Illinois mother, whose brutal death continues to weigh heavily on her family and the local community, is taking a new turn.

Albert L. Zigler, from Caseyville, Illinois, is facing first-degree murder charges related to the 1993 death of 34-year-old Randy Gail Sperino. Her body was discovered in an unincorporated field in Granite City after she had been bludgeoned to death.

At the time of the murder, investigators collected DNA evidence from the scene, but it didn’t lead to any matches in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). Recently, however, the Texas-based genealogy research firm Osram identified Zigler as a suspect.

Despite the significant passage of time, authorities believe they have sufficient evidence to proceed with the case against Zigler. Madison County Sheriff Jeff Conner confirmed the arrest in a press conference, emphasizing the importance of justice for the victim’s family.

Wes Sperino, Randy’s son, expressed his surprise at the arrest. He mentioned feeling hopeful yet uncertain and, upon hearing the news, he felt a rush of emotions. “I was ecstatic and immediately burst into tears of joy. And when I heard the words, ‘We got him,’ I was just in shock,” he recalled.

This breakthrough in the case brings a sense of closure, though the pain of loss lingers. The commitment of the investigators over the years has not gone unnoticed, and the community is slowly beginning to feel a sense of justice after so many years.
