UCLA’s Fearsome Lineup Under Coach Lisa Fernandez
When it comes to college softball, facing Lisa Fernandez on the mound is undoubtedly intimidating. But what’s perhaps even more daunting is the lineup she has cultivated at UCLA.
This team boasts some of the most formidable offensive combinations in the sport. They have a leading batter with impressive cleanup skills and even a No. 9 hitter who consistently gets on base like a leadoff. It’s a blend that’s hard to match.
“Ultimately, our goal is to set records,” Fernandez shared recently. Truth be told, they’ve made significant strides in that direction, especially with their powerful performance in the College World Series.
The Bruins, sporting a record of 52-8 and ranked No. 8 in the double-elimination tournament, are set to face off against the University of Alabama, the top seed at 54-7, in Oklahoma City. They recently broke previous offensive records, highlighting their prowess.
UCLA has hit a jaw-dropping 200 home runs in a season, alongside 651 runs and 623 RBIs. Their ability to combine power with efficiency has been unprecedented, with players like Megan Grant and Jordan Woolley contributing a combined total of 74 homers—more than the entire rosters of many teams.
Behind this historic offensive display is hitting coach Lisa Fernandez, whose own legacy as a player is nothing short of legendary. Back in 1993, he led the nation with a .510 batting average and a 0.25 ERA, driven by a desire to shatter expectations.
“Someone once told me I couldn’t do it, and I embraced that challenge,” Fernandez remarked.
Now in his 28th year as an assistant coach at UCLA, Fernandez, who has only been leading the offense for three seasons, is committed to fostering excellence in his players.
His approach is simple yet effective. After a recent match where the Bruins scored an impressive 23 runs over two games, head coach Kelly Inouye Perez asked about their hitting strategies. In unison, players Arena Garcia and Alexis Ramirez responded, “Touch first base.”
UCLA ranks highly in various offensive metrics, scoring an average of 10.85 RBIs per game, with stellar slugging and on-base percentages. But for Fernandez, what stands out most are the high OPS and on-base figures, as they represent how effectively his players execute their objectives.
Achieving these statistics reflects a change in perspective among the coaching staff. “I didn’t realize what I perceived as a player wasn’t the same for everyone,” said Fernandez, laughing. It became vital to embrace the mental aspects of the game, guiding players to simplify their approaches and enhance their confidence and comfort at the plate.
Continuously, Fernandez elevates everyone in the lineup—not just the standout stars. The goal is a batting order that remains consistently strong throughout.
“Too often, coaches focus too heavily on just a few star players, which can leave others struggling. But Coach Lisa invests in each player, ensuring no one falls short of their potential,” shared Grant.
For Grant, who set a record with 40 home runs this season, developing a free flow in her game has been transformative. “Playing freely enhances my performance. Coach knows my cues and emotions, facilitating great communication and a strong relationship,” she explained.
Notably, after UCLA’s recent victory over Central Florida, Knights coach Cindy Ball Malone found herself admiring what she witnessed, knowing she’d soon be collaborating with Fernandez.
Tasked with coaching a team in the Athletes Unlimited Softball League, which includes key UCLA players, Ball Malone praised Fernandez’s intensity and meticulous nature. “I just want to do something to get her attention,” she remarked.
Further accolades came from Ball Malone concerning Fernandez, suggesting that despite her incredible prowess as a player, her coaching may be even more remarkable. “She’s like the Michael Jordan of softball. She’ll challenge you, and it might feel hard at times, but you’ll have to push yourself to improve,” she added.
Unless, of course, you find yourself facing her outstanding lineup.
