A’s Move to Las Vegas Takes Shape
When the Athletics first revealed their plans to move from Oakland to Las Vegas, many fans were skeptical, seeing it as an unlikely scenario. But as of this past Wednesday, that possibility is starting to take concrete form.
A recent video posted on X by @LasVegasLocally presents the latest developments in stadium construction and what lies ahead for baseball in Las Vegas. It seems the doubts expressed by some Oakland fans about the stadium ever becoming a reality may be fading.
The footage shared highlights that the main concourse of the stadium is complete, and excavation for seating foundations is underway nearby.
For quite a while now, A’s owner John Fisher has been exploring the future of the franchise, which, you might say, is quite the endeavor.
The Athletics had long been based at the Oakland Coliseum, their home since 1968, but the stadium’s age began to show—it was becoming clear that it wasn’t quite suited for professional sports any longer. While the team sought a new venue, the city wanted to keep them. The main sticking point? Who would pay for what, really?
After years of back-and-forth, prompted by ongoing discussions, the A’s officially announced their relocation on November 16, 2023.
At that time, it was reported that Nevada officials had promised Fisher $380 million in funding to support the new stadium.
Yet, complications soon emerged during this process. The Nevada State Teachers Union suggested that the funds should be directed toward educational institutions instead.
Another concern revolved around the overall budget for constructing the stadium—as well as determining accountability for these costs.
On October 31, 2024, Fisher made a notable commitment, pledging $1.1 billion toward the new stadium’s construction. That’s a significant investment.
By July 31, 2025, it was revealed that the estimated costs for building the stadium had surpassed $2 billion, which does raise eyebrows, doesn’t it?
Despite all the uncertainties accompanying the construction of a new stadium in Las Vegas, it appears that Fisher’s dedication to this project is beginning to show tangible results.
